Is this a place to vent? Because I'm about to do just that. UGGHHHH!

So anyway, I emailed the Canadian Consulate here in San Francisco last Monday. It's exactly a week today and still have not heard anything from them. No comfirmation that my email was received, no "we'll get back to you", etc. Well since they're not very much of help to me right now, I figured, my friends at VJ always seem to know the answer to just about any question that I've had in the past. So, what I'd like to know is this. Well first of all, it says that takes approximately up to 4 weeks to apply for a Canadian passport from the US. Now, do I have an option of expediting this so that I could hopefully receive it in 2 weeks? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Actually, I just renewed my passport from the States. I made sure everything was complete, (you can use the old passport form still if you want to use a US based guarantor - or the new form if you have a convenient Canadian guarantor), made sure that the photographs were correct - that is the hardest part here in the US - and sent it all off by courier mid-January. I was expecting a 6 to 8 week wait, however less than 2 weeks later I got back my new passport. It was processed in a week! I didn't expedite it or anything - just made sure it was complete, accurate and spent as little time getting there as was reasonable. The biggest delays happen if they send it back to you because something isn't right - usually the photographs.

Good luck.

The processing time has improved greatly :D Kathryn is correct in that the pictures will hold you up. There is no 'expedited' service through mail in though so it can take up to 4 weeks to get it back. If it's that much of an 'emergency' the quickest way to apply is to go to a passort office in canada. Otherwise plan for 4 - 6 weeks and cross your fingers for faster.

Okay, related question. How long does it take to get your passport if you apply for it in Canada? My fiance is going to renew his early in order to avoid having to do it from here next year. The only real timing issue for him is needing a passport number to put on one of the forms (either DS-156 or DS-156k asks for it). He said he thought it would only take about 10 days, but we don't know if the new passport requirements for land crossings are slowing down Canadian passport offices the way they are US passports.

Yes, this whole canadian guarantor thing makes it even more complicated. Do you mind telling me exactly what I need to do for this? You did mention using the old form, and using a US based guarantor?

Where are you from, btw? I wonder if I should just go ahead and hope for the best that it'll be as fast as yours? I need to be in Vancouver by the 18th of next month... I don't know if this will be enough time to get my passport. I was thinking of just renewing it when we go there. That of course will mean that we'd have to fly to Seattle, then drive up north. Any suggestions???

You can do pick up service in a Canadian office for 2 weeks. Or if you do regular service it's sent by registered mail in 2 - 3 weeks. The passport number will be different in the new passport.

Passports are not required for land crossing until 2009. And even then they will accept an enhanced driver's licence if one is available in your area. So it will be one or the other, not just a passport :D

Guarantor: if you know someone who has a canadian passport that knows you over 2 yrs then they can sign. It can be a relative. If you don't know anyone in this category and you currently reside in the USA if you go to the website, www.passportcanada.gc.ca, you can download what is now known as the 'old form' where the guarantor is 'occupation based' So an american citizen working in the specified occupation can sign for you, ie dentist, medical doctor, lawyer, etc so long as they know you 2yrs as well.

Time: If you sent it in today you would be cutting it close to the 4 week time frame. If your passport is expired then yes you could fly to seattle and drive across, submit your application while in Vancouver, etc. If your passport is still valid on the day you are flying you can use it to fly to Canada. There is no 'time requirement' for your passport's validity to fly from the US to Canada. Just remember when you mail in your form you must submit a valid passport if you have one and your original birth certificate or canadian citizenship card. So if you don't have an extra birth certificate or an expired passport you won't be driving across the border as you have no proof of citizenship if your application isn't processed in time.

Just trying to help as much as possible. Please feel free to PM me.
