I had a question I wanted to ask over here and I've posted several times, but I suddenly realized that I don't think I've actually introduced myself. So...hi! :) I'm the USC (as will probably become very obvious...I'll just admit now that my US geography is atrocious...which means my knowledge of Canadian geography is pretty much nonexistent) and my fiance lives in Winnipeg. We've filed for our K1 in February and it's currently with CSC...so now we're just waiting. I'm extremely impatient and I generally end up passing my time by over-analyzing and trying to plan things as much as possible. Hence the question I wanted to ask! :)

It says in the VJ flowchart for K1 "Depending on which U.S. airport you fly into (NY JFK) some will issue a temporary 90 day work authorization if asked for." Anyone know if this holds true for land POEs? If so, any specific ones? He really hates the idea of not being able to work and I think it will be easier for him to "make himself at home" if he is able to get a job. We're really lucky. My best friend works in a similar field and has already offered to get him a job once he is legally able to work.

Anyway...thanks in advance for any help. Good luck to everyone. :)

Yes, there have been a few land crossings that have issued the work authorization. The one that comes to mind is Windsor/Detroit in Ontario. I am sure others will chime in with ones they know about. I believe someone a few months back was doing a survey to find out which land POE offered work authorization. If I track it down, I will put the link in this thread.

Good luck with your application! Since your fiance is from Winnipeg, his K-1 should be processed through Vancouver, BC.

Oh - and welcome to the Canada Forum!

Our tentative plan for once he has the interview is that he'll fly out to Vancouver, then back to Winnipeg. I'll take a couple of days off work and fly up to Winnipeg and we'll drive back to Utah together. Since we're driving it gives us a little lee-way and if we can get the temp work authorization by going through a different POE, it might be worth it. :)

I'm trying to find the survey, but haven't had much luck yet. It's good to know it's there, though!

And thanks for the welcome. :D

Ok, I found some more information. People have had mixed responses from Grand Portage, Minnesota as well, some being told that they do give the stamp and some being told that they don't.

Here is a link to the POE along the Canadian American border. You could find which ones are reasonable enough for you to consider, then call the POE directly and ask them if, as a K-1, your fiance can receive the Employment Authorization stamp in his passport when he activates his K-1. That is probably the best route to pursue.

That's probably what we'll do. Thank you for your help! :) Like I said...I tend to plan early and in as minute detail as possible. Then I usually let the entire plan go and fly by the seat of my pants when the situation actually occurs. :D
