Regarding I-134 sponsor/co-sponsor

Hello,

I know this question gets asked a lot and I'm sorry, but everyones situation is different.

My fiance is not employed at the moment, he has been a student for the last few years. His parents have supplied the money for schooling. He doesnt own any property assets, but he does own a car ( I think). His savings is a few thousand short of the required amount for 2.

His mother has agreed to be a co-sponsor, but she is recently retired and I dont know if she makes much from the retirement. She does own a car, and a fairly large home, and also has no dependants (unless you can include cats, lol).

my question is this: should I go ahead with this setup even if it just barely meets the required 125%? (can they deny my approval if they dont like it? and if they do deny it, do we have to start all over again? or just show proof that we have another co sponsor?) or should I find a better co-sponsor just to be safe? (we have a few others that I know make enough to satisfy the need, but they really intimidate me and I'd hate to ask them because I know they dont like immigrants and they'll just say "oh you should just break up and not bother with it").

Thanks for any responses, this is a really worrisome issue for myself.

Also, when I go to the interview (if we even get that far, but its been 5 months and we haven't got anything back yet other then the NOA1), would it be appropriate to show my finances and maybe some letters from previous employers reinforcing my work ethic? cause im a hard working and I'd rather be sent home to canada than go on welfare.

-Thanks again,

Emily

Asset like savings needs to be 3 times the 125% poverty line in order to rely on asset alone.

Assets need to be liquid in nature easily converted to cash, a home is not considered to be an asset.

Co-sponsor does not need to be a relative.

when I say house, I mean the land the house is on, I believe she owns the land. When you say the assets need to be liquid, does that mean that if shes living in the house on the property she owns, that cannot be included? if so then by property asset, they mean land you own separately? like a cabin or other real estate?

Cabin or other real estate can be listed, an appraisal of property value will be needed to be included, this can be tricky to get, that is why a sponsor or joint sponsor that have sufficient income tend to be the best for this.

If your future mother in law has the required monthly income, it won't matter if it's 'close'. They can't deny you for 'close'. 'Close' only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

You need to do a couple of things....

Look at the 2008 US Poverty Guideline figures.

Ascertain by research if the Vancouver consulate goes by 100% of that figure for the I134 (as they should) or if they use 125% (as some consulates do).

Figure out EXACTLY what your co-sponsors monthly income is.

Worry about making up the difference or finding another co-sponsor only after you have learned these things.

Sounds like you have a smiliar issue to me Emily, with the whole "Oh just break up already" line. Always remember that what you and your fiance want is most important, and what anyone else thinks doesn't matter!

My fiancee and I are hoping that her closest friend will be our co-sponsor, because she's been working for a long time and just got a promotion recently. My fiancee will more than likely have quite a bit in her savings account due to a damages settlement (possibly 100K+) so I'm guessing that even if her friend is a little short, we should be okay?

Also, does age ever play a part? I'm 23, and my fiancee will still be 19 when she starts the petition. Will they take our ages into account and think we wont be able to take care of ourselves?

Petition sent: 12/10/2010

Arrived at service center: 12/14/2010

First NOA: 12/16/2010

Touched: 12/31/2010

Second NOA: 05/24/2011

As long as you are both legally free and able to marry age does not matter.
