Hi,

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered hundreds of times, but I lived in Houston for nearly 18 months and I require a police certificate from the local police dept as far as I know for my interview at the embassy.

I have been told from the local police dept where I lived i need to be there in person or they can send it to another agency for me.

How do i go about getting this certificate from them? Is there a agency i apply to specifically that will get this for me?

Thanks!

Mike

There is no such thing. Your case is handled by the US government, USCIS, NVC and Consulate. At all points of the process they are doing various Name Checks, this is the USA Police Check.

I am sitting here with the same issue right now. Is there some sort of official source, that verifies this? All I got from the embassy on that issue is attached to this post; that just doesn't say anything about US records being excluded. Sorry to be paranoid, but you know... better be safe than sorry.

Thanks!

Yes, The Department of State website.

Police Certificates

Each applicant aged 16 years or older must submit police certificates. The table below will assist in determining from where an applicant must obtain police certificates.

Note: Present and former residents of the United States should NOT obtain any police certificates covering their residence in the U.S.

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/in...195.html#police

Applying logic here, the US government is processing the application, they are performing all types of name checks on the prospective immigrant, they will see that you lived in the USA by info you put on the application, so they will contact the appropriate agencies and ask for records. The name checks by USCIS, NVC, and Consulate handles the USA police certs. There are several other countries that the prospective immigrant cannot get police certs for also (Like The Netherlands), and in those cases the consulate will contact the appropriate countries and request data as part of their name checking.
