COLUMBUS, Miss. - Democrat Barack Obama has ridiculed the idea of being Hillary Rodham Clinton's running mate this fall. Speaking in Mississippi on Monday, the Illinois senator said voters should not think they can get both candidates on the ticket by nominating Clinton as president and assuming he will accept the vice presidential spot.

Obama told a midday crowd, "You have to make a choice in this election."

Obama did not absolutely close the door to a second spot on the ticket, but it was his most pointed signal that he is not interested.

Obama noted that he has won more states, votes and delegates than Clinton so far, and he says he thinks he can win the nomination.

Obama is making several campaign stops in Mississippi, which holds its primary Tuesday.

Nah, it wouldn't be great. It would by hypocrisy on Hillary's part. You don't select a VP who you don't feel is ready for the WH. If he's ready, then stop claiming he isn't in your campaign. If he's not, then don't pick him as a VP and put us in the hands of someone you don't feel is qualified to lead.

It would indeed be great!

And, here is the reason why, especialy for democrats.

At this point, there are some independents and republicans (those suffering from buyer's remorse for voting in the lousiest president in history) rooting for Obama. Also, both Obama democrats and Clinton democrats are focusing on who comes out on top in the primaries. Just for this election.

Actually, for democrats, they should be thinking of reversing this Bush-made disaster on both foreign and domestic fronts. To do that, they have to win first. But beyond that, they should be thinking of how to make sure that the changes put in place by a democratic president stay in place. For that, we need to have i.e. build a sustainable democratic majority for the long run. Something similar to what Rove aspired to and failed to achieve- a permanent majority.

Democrats should look to a long range plan and shoot for that sustainable majority the way FDR did.

Obama has brought in the young college educated into the democratic fold along with African Americans and affluent liberals and independents who, hopefully, will not defect to McCain. Hillary brings to the table, older folks, women, hispanics, blue collar, under $50,000 earners etc.

If the democratic party can put these groups together, via Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton team, the disastrous policies of the republicans can not only be reversed but swept away or at least kept at bay for the forseable future.
