It's a nice city, worth a look around. The castle ain't bad, but 7 miles up the road is the second biggest castle in Europe with a tower leaning more than Pisa. Get thee to Caerphilly, if you have time :)

Loads of lovely scenery to see too, you don't need to go far outside of Cardiff to see it either.

What sort of time will you have up here, a whole day?

Yeah, I figured I'd take the train from Bristol to somewhere in Wales for a day, going back that night. So nothing out of the way of public transport...

I really liked Abergavenny (Y Fenni), but my favourite was Llanthony, in the Black Mountains. Scenery is fantastic, great walking, ruined abbey... ace.

I want to see the Black Mountains but I am taking a train, and won't have a car!

My favorite daytrip in Wales is Conwy. There is a nice deserted castle. Betws y Coed not far from Conwy and its lovely little town. We also went to Canaerfon, but that bottoms my list. Although, the pub there, the Black Boy is excellent.

Is it accessible by public transport?

Its more North Wales, so probably won't work for your day trip, given your coming from Bristol. I absolutely love Wales. I'm sure you'll enjoy where ever you visit as its all quite lovely (I would exclude Rhyl and Prestatyn though - too many caravans!)

hmmm, although Wales is very lovely I'd be day-tripping to Exmoor which is one of my favorite places in the whole country

It looks good! His parents want to take a day trip with us, I was leaning towards Cheddar Gorge or Wookey Caves but maybe we;ll do Exmoor...

In one day from Bristol you could probably do both Cardiff Castle and Caerphilly Castle if you wanted. Its 50 minutes from Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff Central, then about 10 min walk. All the valley lines tie into Cardiff Central so you can also catch a train to Caerphilly which is about 25 minutes or so.

It's about a 5 minute walk down hill from Caerphilly station to the castle then - you can't miss it, the castle is in the centre of the town. :)

Cheddar Gorge and Wooky Hole are my favourite places in England, I would go there!

My family is from north Wales, I've only been to south Wales once and we went to St David's.... I would recommend going there, it's sooooo cute but it might be a bit far for a day trip, not sure.

Tenby is a great place to visit too.

If you ever get a chance to go to north Wales it's way better ;) - Betws-y-Coed and Beddgellert are my favourite places.

I didn't use a car to visit Llanthony. All we did was take the train to Abergavenny from Bristol, and got a taxi to Llanthony. It's 7 miles of GORGEOUS scenery on the ride, and taxis are pretty inexpensive out to get out there.

Abergavenny itself is on the edge of the Black Mountains (and by extension the Brecon Beacons); Sugar Loaf is only 2 miles outside of town and walking distance from the train station. It's a great walk up -- it's only about 2,000ft high or so (if I can recall), not a killer, with fantastic views all the way to the Bristol Channel.

Tenby is gorgeous. There's a lovely little shop there called Equinox which sells candles and esoteric stuff. A friend of mine lives in Maesteg, which is sweet, but prolly not site seeing worthy.

John Barrowman lives in Cardiff, so I'd go just on the off chance I might see him wandering around. :D
