I voted no - I respect anyone working hard and to the best of their ability no matter what occupation....

I dont look down on anyone for what they do for a living.

I have had some generally "crappy" jobs... I think of them as crappy because Ive been there and done that. I think of them as crappy because I know that the pay is sh*tty and the work is hard.

I actually respect people with jobs that I think of as crappy, because they are willing to do them. I respect anyone who will take any job to support themselves or their families.

If I had to, I would dig ditches or do anything(legal lol) to support my son.

Like the poll!

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

Do you think you're "better" than people who have jobs that are less glamorous than yours? For example, if you have an office type job do you look down on people in the service industry, etc.? Does your salary help determine your value as a person?

Of course not!

Jenn, I'm curious to know what made you make this poll :)

Caro

It was a post in another thread that to me read like the poster felt superior to people who hold certain jobs. Thought it would be interesting to see how pervasive that attitude is.

I'm a teacher and I've seen first hand that there are all sorts of intelligences. By that I'm not refering to Gardner's Multiple Intelligences which are about how everyone learns the same knowledge and skills in different ways. I mean that some people are cut out to crunch numbers, some to diagnose diseases, some to finesse engines, etc. Where would we be without good auto mechanics or the guy who drives the bus? I want the person who paints my house to take pride in doing a good job. If I think it is a job to look down on, how can I expect the painter to care about doing it right?

I personally think anybody who can paint and do it right - is a genius.

I think you should have made a sneakier poll. Nobody's gonna be honest, even with themselves, if they think they're better than others.

I do think that believing all jobs, if they're honest work, deserve equal respect is an American middle-class value that isn't shared by everyone.

I was thinking that the people who do think that way would not be ashamed to admit it and would claim that everyone deep down really does think they're better and denying it was hippy PC bullsh!t.

I guess I was wrong!

Maybe.

depends on the job. If I"m comparing myself to a hooker then I gotta go with yes. If I'm comparing myself with a sewerage cleaner person (keeping with the crappy job theme) then no since I admire someone who can clean up ####### for a living. I could never handle that and....well.......I'd probably end up being a hooker.

I do think I'm "better" than some people whose jobs I'd consider crappy.

I also think I'm better than some people with the *same* job as me, and also that I'm better than some people who would think I have a crappy job. The particular job doesn't have nearly as much to do with it as doing the best you can with what you've got, being pleasant and professional, and knowing yourself and your priorities and how to best meet those priorities.

For example, suppose someone works a second job at McDonald's because it's the best he or she could get in order to support his/her kids as a single parent with no education, and he/she does the best they can to be a damn good Mickey D's employee—I don't think there's anything wrong with that. But if someone is the absent parent to a couple of kids and is voluntarily under-employed so he/she doesn't have to pay as much child support to the person taking care of his/her kids—then yes, I think I'm better than that person!

I don't give a hoot what people do for a living. I have never thought myself better than anyone else. I have worked with truly horrible people who made $500k a year, and truly wonderful people who have made $25k a year. My friends are from all walks of life, doing all sorts of different jobs. I started life as an admin assistant but was lucky to work with some great people who saw potential in everyone and helped me up the job ladder. I like to think I'm repeating that process.

I'm "just a teacher", so I'm glad to hear all of your remarks about my profession. I think that most teachers teach because they love it - we know that we make less than we should - but we have an important job and I (L) it.

I don't think I'm better than anyone else because of the job I have vs. theirs. This is something that my mom taught me and I'm glad. My mom's sisters always thought they were better than her because they have more schooling, yet they're not half the woman she is.

I do get mad though when my students don't want to take advantage of their education - and just want to drop out. I tell them that any job that you do should be done with pride and you should work hard. But if they're going to have a "menial" job because they were too lazy to go to school and study - well, I don't feel sorry at all for them. I make a point that if they study they have much higher chances of doing better $$.

I dunno - I think I'm better than a jobsworth. It says a lot when someone hides behind the beaureacracy so they can avoid doing their job properly.

You can't look down on anyone that is willing to do an honest days work. No matter what it is.

I remember when I was young, working for a friend of mine that was just starting a traveling carnival. So he had a moon walk for the kid's and an ice cream and frozen banana stand. He said if me and my other friend would go with him to work the timber festival in southern Oregon he would give us a share of the profit.

10 day festival in Douglas county. We slept on the hard floor of a trailer, worked 15+ plus hours a day with no breaks, was only able to take one shower in the whole 10 days, and made 80 dollars each for the whole 10 days, after he took what he spent on food after the festival. Oh and did I mention it was 90+ degrees F almost every day.

I had to do some pretty fast talking about 5 days in to get my friend to stay with me. He was going to go home. I reminded him that he gave his word, as did I.

I have always believed that you never break your word no matter what the cost, or the pay.

My beloved Joy is here, married and pregnant!
