I told my sister (who has an expensive diamond ring like many of you) to get insurance on that thing  ...that way if she loses it - she's covered. Someone told me that jewelry insurance is expensive - but worth it if you ask me.

My husband & I have also talked about getting different wedding rings in the future - upgrading...hehehe - and maybe we will down the road. I'd like to get him something a bit stronger and I know he's looked at stones for me - as long as they're not diamonds I don't care...

It was really important for me to have it, not because I wanted a great big ring or anything, but because I knew we were going to be apart for a long while. I hated the time of separation that followed (8 months) but it definitely made it easier for me returning to Europe wearing the ring. It felt more real, and every time I look at my finger I am reminded of just how much my fiance loves me.

That's how I feel StoryAngel. I don't have a diamond, didn't want one in fact. I'm very anti-diamond. But we found a beautiful 3 stone peridot ring (his birthstone) and I really wanted an engagement ring. In Germany, according to P and my friends, couples often get their wedding bands and wear them on their left hands during the engagement and then switch them to the right hand during the ceremony. I didn't want to do that since he's going to wear his ring on his left hand. For me though, it wasn't about the material item, it was something for me to have as a phsyical reminder that we will be together again.

It may sound silly, because I have him (and he, me) with or without the ring, but it makes me feel better. And it's really pretty :) but i would be engaged to him without one.

Yes, that's how it's done, not so much any more now, but my parent's generation did it that way.

My husband told me about the American tradition and how guys are "expected" to spend about three month's salary on an engagement ring not to be considered cheap.

I always knew that wasn't what I wanted but like many here I liked the idea of wearing a ring while waiting for the visa and being apart.

We bought our wedding bands (simple gold bands) during a joint trip to Andorra, had our names engraved into them there and wore them on the left hand ever since.

I did want an engagement ring, but I didn't have any expectation about what kind of ring I wanted. My fiance did! He always knew what he wanted and he got me the most beautiful ring I could have ever wished to have! We get lots of compliments about it. It was a good thing that he chose it himself, because I would have probably picked a smaller one! LOL

I've heard so many people saying that an expensive engagement ring is not worth it or it's a waste of money. I think it depends on the financial situation of the couple, if you get in debt for a ring then it's definitely not worth it or if you are going to lack other important things, it would not be wise to spend lots of money on a ring.

I love our engagement ring! To me it represents my fiance's hard work, effort and his love, I wear it all the time and I'm not ashamed to show it off :)
