You can freeze your credit, and no one will be able to open a credit card or anything that requires a credit check, in your name. But on the card where the identity theft occurred, you should close it down, and have them re-open under a new number.

The freeze is for 7 years, its free for identity theft victims, $10 for those that just want it. I think its great given these times.

You can also place fraud alerts with all 3 credit reporting agencies.

Sorry this happened to you... happened to me too, someone stole my purse in 2005 and within hours spent $1000 on gift cards. Luckily they used my credit union visa and they were very good about removing that debt from my account with proof of police report.

I've had fraud alerts placed on my reports ever since. I got a call from LAPD that they arrested a woman who had a checkbook in her possession with my drivers license # printed on it. Weird. I explained to them that my purse had been stolen in 05 and that gift cards were purchased. They said the woman they busted had a long history of gift card purchases and they were trying to convict her of a it.

Fraud alerts are a pain in the booty if you ever want to try and get instantly approved but I would rather have the pain of that then of id theft.

I use lifelock for both of us $20 a month for peace of mind. They automatically do all the fraud alerts every 3 months and keep an eye on any applications for credit or weird expenditures, I do have to usually tell anyone I am dealing with that we do have lifelock or else they wont process any applications including gas when they check your credit report.

We have had no problems for many months now.

It’s quite necessary to protect your financial details and nowadays it’s becoming a practice to make things secure due to the increasing thefts. I had recently heard about services that keep your identity locked. They help you to protect your private information so that you can be relaxed about them being used to your loss. It’s a good way to make us feel at home about out things in spite of us using them in public. I believe that your question will be satisfied by this and you can make your self updated by taking the necessary steps.
