Some do, indeed, wear them for fashion reasons, but for those that do it out of convenience.... The thought of wearing clothes, that I wore to a store filled with people and products, inside my bed feels filthy. Sort of like cross contamination. I want fresh clothes at night that do not have the day's dirt and germs all over them. Its one of things I appreciate about my fiancée's culture. Just for the reasons stated, Russians don't wear "home clothes" and slippers outdoors.

:)

I am sure people have always done that for convenience but I got the impression this was some kind of 'fashion statement' thingy which is why I wondered if they are special 'outdoor' pyjamas.

Most of the high school kids in my town wear their pj bottoms to school now and about 30% are Russian.

I'm sure. But they are here and not in Russia (i.e. trying to fit into American fashion.) Plus, they are 20 years my fiancée's juniour. I know of no older Russian living in Russia or the States that would dare wear street shoes in a house or home clothes out in public.

Man...I'm guilty of the pj bottoms AND the crocs, especially back when I was in high school. Most people at my college are either dressed super (have to go to work after class), dressed like ####### in jammies (going to bed directly after class), or dressed in gym clothes (stinking or soon to be). There really isn't much in between at all.

I personally think it makes for variability and life more interesting, and tells you something about what the person's up to, and makes some of these otherwise perfect model girls that I envy look more human. I like it :)

Have seen quite a slew of guys though running to class in the morning with sweatshorts on and nothing else, shirt halfway overhead, doesn't even bother with shoes. And there ARE a fair few people here that have this no-shoes thing going and walk around the whole city day in and out NEVER with shoes on. I hate shoes and don't wear them if I can get away with it but that makes even me squirm a bit.

Summer 2001 - met my Scottish boy

Oh, you fuddy-duddies!

When I was a senior in high school in suburban Boston, a specific style of pajama bottoms with vertical stripes was all the rage, especially when paired with Converse Chucks. And there is photo proof that I succumbed to this. Silly, but it sure was comfy!

I have to say, in terms of egregious fashion offenses among teenage girls, wearing pajama bottoms is hardly the worst.

I saw a lot of girls going to class in PJs when I was in college too. Then again, that was when grunge was at the peak of its popularity--flannel and all that--and the sloppier, the better.

No,Joyce my dear,I am speaking of women my age dropping the kids off to school and to the bus stop.In High School,I guess it's passable. But walking around all the time like that,oh no.

Oh--by "young girls" I figured you meant teenagers.

I have an exceptionally high tolerance for bad dress, I think. I have negative fashion sense myself, so I can't really throw stones. However, I must say I cringe when I see the occasional pudgy middle-aged guy with sweatpants and crocs. Especially orange crocs.

:lol: Where do you see that ?

Unfortunately, central and southeast Arizona seems to be croc central because it's sandals weather more or less year round. And lots of chimichangas and beer. And snowbirds from the Midwest in their shorts with sparkly white legs seem to like them. It all adds up to a horrifying spectacle! And now that spring training has started, they multiply by the day!

I actually don't object to all crocs. My sister has a pair of black ones, and if you wear them with dark socks, they look more or less like clogs.

See thru legs with shorts and crocs ? Oh my ! :help:

What ever happened to Zubaz? Now that was a fashion statement.

What's zubaz ?

russian kids who go to school in america have been americanized. i don't know even any young russians in russia who would wear sweatpants/pajamas outside either. the only people who I ever saw wearing anything close to "indoor" clothes on the streets are middle-aged men/petty criminals/drunks in swishy windbreaker-material pants. and you can bet that even these guys had their special "indoor" track pants and their "outdoor" track pants. my guy has an "indoor" pair of jeans and an "indoor" sweater, and he will always change to "outdoor" ones before he leaves his flat.

i am wearing sweatpants right now and if i were going to run across campus to get a soda i would still change out of my "home" outfit. that's the way i was raised. i don't want anyone to see me in my baggy, unfashionable sweatpants! :)

It is not just you... I'm really tired of women (young and old) out in public with PJ bottoms and bedroom slippers. Same goes for men... Outgrown the jeans and can't bend over with their big pot bellies to tie their own shoes so they put on sweat pants and slippers. Our obese nation continues to grow each and every day.

I notice it everywhere. Especially after being with a Russian woman for so long. Americans don't feel the need to "dress" for some reason. And I think this can be directly connected with health and shape of the person wearing these lazy clothes. If you're in college I can see living with this fashion, as college students tend to be broke and tired most of the time. I'm sick of this also.

sweatpants/pajama pants aren't really cheaper than normal pants and there's a lot of downtime in college. IMO, they're just lazy!

 I've never been so busy as I was in college. Everyone said "wait til you graduate! You'll see having a real job is much more stressful!" Definitely not true. The people who said that must have been slackers in college. :) That said, I did usually find the time to put on a pair of dress pants or a skirt before leaving the house. I occasionally wore sweatpants though. It was completely acceptable.

I don't know any Russian who would wear pajama bottoms in public. The closest thing I saw to that was my friend Svetlana's Betty Boop pants. They were regular pants not pj's.

I've noticed that this iis one of the reasons some Europeans laugh at us Americans.I have heard the comments myself.

It's funny, because I associate the pajama pants trend with fit college students.

Personally, I wouldn't wear pajama pants out of the house, but it's also not something that really gets me worked up if other people do it. They're covered, it looks like #######, but they're not dressing up for me, I expect, so who cares?
