to all pinoys/pinays:

how well have you adjusted here in the US?

after 9 months of being here, i'm still adjusting. i live in a town in IL where majority of the population is white people so there's no filipino stores or restos or whatsoever. i need to find a job soon because i'm so homesick for manila! i even miss jollibee for cryin' out loud! :(

let's hear your experiences!

Im sorry to hear that. I thought IL is full of Filipinos. In fact most of my kababayans are there. Anyhow, just hang in there, sooner you will be adjusted to the kind of life here. I have only been here for more than 4 months now but I enjoy everything. Florida weather is just like the Philippines, although lately we are under the tornado watch. A Filipino store is located 15 minutes away from me although I would have been okay without it. I was not really a big fan of jollibee so im good without it. I am sure when you will start working, you will be adjusted more since there will be more to do than just stay home .

Hang in there :)

Hello,

You will find lots of Filipinos attending mass in the church during Sundays. That's how I found Filipino friends when we were In Germany and I did the same thing now that we're in Florida.

Goodluck and God bless....

life for me in the US is pretty much different from my daily activities in phil (lol obviously)... ive been here almost 14 months now and yes of course i miss my family and jollibee also (the place i hang out after class... weird though when we went there for a visit last nov. i dropped by at jollibee and noticed that the taste is a bit different. hmm whatever happened to my taste bud? lol)... never work before in the states except in our store which i consider not a real "job" coz im being employed by my husband lol. so i was pretty much at home most of the time... just 2 weeks ago i found this job, its a work at home job but you have to report 30hrs/week in your computer. its a call center type and we handle comcast billing (inbound customer service)... its not my first priority but since i have no experience yet, i have to take whatever there is for now, especially $9/hr is ok considering you're just gona stay at home or some quite office space in our store... but i miss phil all the time. my mom and my bros... i enjoyed the life here, more activities and more opportunity to see things in a different way yet im saving money or trying to lol, so i could buy plane tickets to visit phil again...

I am here for nearly 5 months now got my GC but no drivers license yet.. I am waiting for my credentials evaluated in Washington as well they said it was mailed yesterday. I am interested to find work at home but some i found seem phony. Ronmay , may I ask what website you are in now..?

Being with students for 4 yrs in PI really is different being alone here for 10 hours in our house.. Just glad I have a sister to talk to on the net or on the phone during day time. Here in Clarkesville Ga I have not seen any filipino as well so basically just me.

hey riza! sure id be glad to help! actually ur right theres a bunch of phony in the work at home type... but this is legit ( i have to pass all the requirements, such as driver's license, GC, w2 and other legal docs to prove i can work) plus there's 7 stages of skill test e.g interview, typing test, behavioral i think etc... the website is cloud10corp.com sister company of transcom north america which i think base in canada... anyways im on training right now and its fun... just give me a pm if u need more info!

I've been here in Missouri for only 8 months and so far, so good. I can say that I am well adjusted now and loving every day of my life here with my husband. In my opinion, one of the greatest factor in getting adjusted and acclimated is when the husband or wife is working and "you" being alone most of the time. My husband helped me alot in adapting to almost everything here. He's retired so we're together every single day of our lives. We do things together, we go out, travel, try new stuff, etc. Homesickness was/is not a big problem since my husband is always there to help me get over it. I can always pick up the phone or text my family whenever I'm missing them. As for the food that I grew up with, we have an oriental store not so far from our home and my husband is the one who always encourages me to try cooking Filipino dishes so I won't miss it so much. We visit his kids and relatives every now and then, just so I could have the feel of being surrounded by "family". I have met a lot of friends from going to church every night and every now and then, have dinner with them. I'm not working and no desire of doing so (at least as of yet) since my husband is a retiree. It's a mutual understanding and we both agreed on that. Besides, it will be unfair for him if I will leave him here at home while I'm working. But don't think that he's not thinking about my self-development because he assured me that I can always try something for myself. He said I can go to school or do anything else that will help me widen my horizon. I feel so lucky to be married to my husband. I don't think I could ever make it here if not for him. I've never dreamed (not even in my wildest imagination) that I could be a good wife. I am, because I am married to the most wonderful person in the world (in my eyes :luv: ).

This coming June, we will go back to the Philippines to see my family. I am very excited. I never thought that he will fulfill his promise (this quick) to my dad that he will make it sure that they will get to see me (us) at least once a year. When we go back there, I will be eating at Jollibee!!! Yeah!:dance::dance:

Just over a month here in San Francisco and although I love this city, having lived here for a year before, I miss home so much. These past few days I feel so down, emotional coz of the adjustment phase - planning for our church wedding, remodeling my hubby's house, AOS, etc. Although I stay with my sister sometimes, its not the same anymore once you get married. The biggest adjustment for me, by far, is suddenly being independent from my parents for good this time. Money was never an issue, but now it is. It sucks but I believe that there is always a way.

I'm glad the VJ community will always be here.

hey myla.. yes, there are lots of filipinos here but they are in chicago or within the surrounding cities.. i'm still persuading husband to move there someday.. as for jollibee, while back in the PI, i can't say i'm really a big fan of it cuz at some point, it becomes nakakasawa. Since i haven't had it for quite some time, i really miss it!! Jollibee is soo pinoy.

I'm sure there are Asian stores near you. Did you ever try friendster or myspace.com? I found Filipino friends on that site. I'm doing well here, got a job at a retail store, but it sucks that everything seems so far away that you need a car. And, oh! I don't really like when the temperature gets low. So, warm weather is the best thing that I miss about PI. I miss my family even though I've been independent since I reached the age of 18.
