Anti-war judge rejects foster teen's bid to join military

I have to wonder how anyone who has just watched Full Metal Jacket can claim to be be "sold" by it on joining the military.

It shows:

1) Institutional bullying in the boot camp resulting in a murder-suicide.

2) An extended battle scene resulting in the surviving soldiers standing awkwardly as a teenage girl (that they have shot) chokes to death on her own blood.

Well perhaps under these circumstances the judge did have a good reason to keep a potential Section 8er out of service. Who knows?

My opinion is that, this foolish war being wrong and all, and the decision being perfectly within the court's right as legal guardian of the 17 year old, perhaps the kid should have been allowed to enlist.

It will be funny if he actually does in a year's time...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

It's good to see you keeping up your high standars of deductive reasoning as you effortlessly draw a parallel between driving and being a member of the armed forces...especially one who is likely to face combat duties in a war zone. Marvelous.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I am sure all the armed forces currently serving in Iraq would be happy to see you feel that way. Maybe you should tell them sometime that it sure as hell beats driving on the freeway with those pesky murderous teens in their lethal cars.

That's pretty offensive, Charles.

For the record, I don't think 17-year-olds should be allowed to drive.

But they certainly shouldn't be doing something like going to Iraq and coming home missing body parts, without their sanity, or in a box.

People do stupid things a lot of times... choice is something people sometimes learn to regret quietly on their own.

Again, there is no parallel between the two types of 'offensive' but then again, I know you can't tell the difference.

I don't trust anyone to make a decision about joining the military when their basis for it is a Vietnam war movie, the point of which they clearly missed.

Or having an 'understanding' of defending a freedom that has absolutely no bearing on the same freedom we/they permit to be railroaded in practice. Then again, this is a choice, and some in uniform do end up developing the capacity for critical thought... independently of the doctrine, mind you.

The military doesn't need any Hurgh-yeah! gung-ho types.

Perhaps he can't wait to shoot some bullets into a few people - as Ride of the Valkyries plays in the background. Then for a finale - he can throw a puppy off a cliff. The idiot.
