SSN Issue

We went to the Social Security Office today to get David's social security card ordered. She put all his information in and said he was in the system but that whoever typed his information in in the first place put the wrong birth year (1981 instead of 1985 ) and that it could take 3-4 months for her to get clearance to order the card.

She said that we could call "them" and talk to them about it to maybe speed things up...I asked her who we should call and she said "well, whoever you got your visa through I guess".....

Does anyone know who the SS Office goes through for clearance and/or a number we could call about correcting it? 3-4 months is far too long of a wait for his SSN....We need it.

SSA may surprise you and send it out in much less time. Besides it is not needed until after getting EAD or Green-card, at that time an employer will need the number, and in most cases employers will give you time to provide the SSN to them.

From many posts I have read, the card is just mailed out, no notice.

In most cases he can be added to your bank accounts without SSN, you just need to be firm with the bank officer, it is law what SSN can and cannot be used for.

Well, we called the USCIS misinformation line...one woman told us to make an infopass appt. (which we did) then we called again hoping to maybe get a more helpful person, and SHE told us that he can't get a SSN till he gets his greencard wow.......

I'm never calling that number again if I can help it.

My case was seemingly similar to yours since when I went to the SSA office to apply for my social security card they said that the DHS database wrongly encoded F1 instead of K1. They said it would take months to correct it since they need to send the documents to DHS for further verification blah...blah...blah. I insisted that it was not our fault and suggested that they can take the copy of my visa, I-94, and passport's biographical page as evidence that the information was incorrect. So, they took all the documents and they faxed it to DHS. Then, handed me an acknowledgment receipt and informed me to wait for 2-4 weeks. After a month of waiting I finally got my SSN. I would suggest that you go back to the SSA Office and bring the birth certificate, passport's biographical page or the K1 visa, anything that will show your hubby's correct bdate and submit it to them and they will be the one to submit it to the DHS. I hope that everything will be fine with your case.

thats what they did for me too. They made copies of my passport and my birth certificate and told me it'll be a while... im so frustrated. I HATE THE RED TAPE!!!!!!!!! i understand why so many people south of USA just come illegally, its so much easier lol

Well, I would assume that is what she did for us, she made copies of the Birth Certificate, I-94, and Biographical page and said she'd have to get clearance from DHS to issue the SSN. Very frustrating but hopefully you are right and it will only take 4 weeks.

My husband added me to his bank account, credit cards and medical insurance before I got my SSN. No problem. For the bank we had to go there in person and if I remember correctly I had to show two id's (I also brought my marriage certificate to show the name change). Adding me to the credit cards only took a phone call and it was done. Very easy.

me too I had problems with SSN , since I applied for it after i was married the name didnt match with the name they had , I went there 3 times showed millions of prove and print outs that i was elegible for SSN so blah blah blah had to have DHS request for status , they said 4-6 weeks , so I send a nice lil e mail to the head office complained about my local office , not even 3 weeks later I had a notice in mail then few days later the SSN
