Proof of Engagement

In China rings are not worn by the majority of people. In fact it is an odd occurrence

when a couple does wear rings. On the I169 form it asks for proof of engagement to

your fiancee. Since I didn't buy her a ring, but simply asked her to marry me in a chat

program, how in the world am I going to prove we are engaged? Sending a ring

through the mail to China is at best risky. Valuable things tend to disappear. Has

anyone ran in to this situation before.

I wear a ring but didn't send any ring receipt, 'cus we had ours made with gold from my father, and we have no receipts for them. Not everyone has a ring receipt so you shouldn't worry.

The letters of intent to marry from you and your fiancee that you send with your 129F petition should be sufficient evidence of engagement.

Not everyone has bought a ring yet - some will buy one as part of a wedding set AFTER they emigrate. You don't HAVE to supply a ring reciept - its just a suggestion IF you have one.

We had just simple silver bands, nothing fancy. I don't think we turned in any pictures of them, and no receipts.

I think you're referring to the I-129F.

In the I-129F instructions it does not ask for "proof of engagement". It does ask for a signed and dated statement from both you and your fiancee as to your intentions to marry.

In addition it asks that you prove your eligability to marry by submitting documentation such as divorce decrees, death certificates, etc. If neither of you were ever married then this is unecessary.

Not everyone sends ring receipts and I don't think you should even try to explain why you don't have them, it will draw attention to something they won't miss most likely. You need to use other forms of proof such as travel receipts, engagement cards etc in combo with your letters of intent.

You can also provide them with congratulation cards or letters from family and friends. My fiancee has the ring I gave her that she wears all the time, so she will show her ring at the interview, as well as the congrat cards we received. The letter of intent to marry also is the big piece of eveidence.

Intent to marry is certainly important. Providing evidence of a relationship is alsocritical. Maria and I have been fortunate enough to see each other a number of times prior to filing for a K-1. Numerous photos, copies of exchanged letters and address labels of packages, printout outs of exchanged emails, receipts and tickets for airlines, hotels and dining (and yes, a receipt for an engagement ring). Maria also keeps in contact with a few family members of mine. All these things will help with the filing process. Good luck.

Ooops, you are correct and I should have said that. Our lawyer has prepared the "evidence" package in advance of the interview stage and we continue to add items to it during the interval.

I agree with the rest. If you are filing the I129-F, you only need a few pictures to prove you have met, per the requirement. I also sent in my boarding pass and stamps in my passport. All the other evidence will be presented at the interview. My fiance and I had rings, and he showed his at the interview but they never asked for a receipt. You do need to send in the letters of intent to marry and we updated ours for his interview.
