OK so putting people in harms way can't be condoned - I get that. But surely neither can the idea that bombs should be dropped on densely populated areas where you can be assured of massive carnage?

Even if densely populated by terrorists? The bombs killed 100 people in Gaza, at least 50% of whom were combatants.

50%!!! Surely they can't be that "innocent", if they are literally surrounded by terrorists.

I don't believe the reality behind those statistics is as cut and dried as you want to claim.

Nor do I believe there's a clear division of ethical responsibility when it comes to that level of collateral damage.

you've used that one before. he sure looks like a real prisoner eh?

It's not even an army vehicle. משטרה = Police

In April 2004, the Israeli army was caught on film after they tied a 13-year-old Palestinian boy, Mohammed Bedwan, to the front of a border police jeep in an effort to prevent Palestinian demonstrators from throwing stones during a protest against the construction of the separation barrier in the West Bank village of Biddu. Three adult protestors, including one international and one Israeli activist, were also tied to jeeps during the same protest.

20 July 2006: Israeli Soldiers use civilians as Human Shields in Beit Hanun

B'Tselem's initial investigation indicates that, during an incursion by Israeli forces into Beit Hanun, in the northern Gaza Strip, on 17 July 2006, soldiers seized control of two buildings in the town and used residents as human shields.

After seizing control of the buildings, the soldiers held six residents, two of them minors, on the staircases of the two buildings, at the entrance to rooms in which the soldiers positioned themselves, for some twelve hours. During this time, there were intense exchanges of gunfire between the soldiers and armed Palestinians. The soldiers also demanded that one of the occupants walk in front of them during a search of all the apartments in one of the buildings, after which they released her. Israeli Soldiers use civilians as Human Shields in Beit Hanun

oh, and again.

Israelis soldiers were filmed using Sameh Amira, 24, as a human shield on February 25, during a week-long raid into the West Bank city of Nablus. Mr Amira was made to search homes in the city's casbah, or old city, during a search for wanted men and bomb-making laboratories. The casbah in the centre of the city was placed under curfew for two days and a Palestinian man was shot dead when he went onto the roof of his home.

Mr Amira's cousin, 15-year-old Amid Amira, told B'Tselem that soldiers also forced him to search three houses, making him enter rooms, empty cupboards and open windows.

An 11-year-old girl, Jihan Dadush, told B'Tselem that soldiers took her from her home three days later, on February 28, forcing her to open the door of a neighboring apartment and enter ahead of them. The soldiers then took her home, she said.

bfd. they kept prisoner with them while in a firefight. what did you want them to do, take them thru fire to the rear area?

and as for making someone walk in front of you, hello! that's the best way to keep them covered with weapons. it's downright idiotic to have a prisoner behind you.

the bfd is that doing what they did is in direct violation of a ruling by the israeli supreme court from 2005, in addition to being banned by international law. israelis apparently have a problem with it, because Israel suspends officer for using human shields. oh, and they were doing a whole lot more than walking in front of them. forcing a child to empy cupboards, open windows, open a door, and then taking her home is not walking a prisoner in front of you. it's using a child to clear rooms for you.

so in the future, they should evac the prisoner during a firefight. what a wonderful idea!

they did evacuate some of them during the firefight. the ones they didn't want to keep around for human shields later. from the link i posted:

Threatening the occupants with his weapon, one of the soldiers ordered 'Aza Kafarneh, a 43-year old woman, to accompany him to search each of the floors in the building and to open the doors of each of the rooms. (why was she forced to accompany him to search the rooms when everyone else stayed in one place with the rest of the soldiers?) At the end of the search, the soldiers ordered all the occupants, except for three, to leave the building. As they left, there was a heavy exchange of gunfire between IDF soldiers and Palestinians. In her testimony to B'Tselem, 'Aza Kafarneh related that, in light of the situation, she requested the soldier to let them remain in the building, but the soldiers refused. "We had to lay flat on the ground and crawl to the neighbor's house..." The three who were kept in the building were two of her sons, Hazem, 14, and Qusay, 16, and her nephew, Khaled, 23.

i've got more time farting in a combat zone that you have total time in a combat zone. while it's easy for you to armchair quarterback the above, there are quite plausible reasons for it - they didn't have enough to guard the prisoners, they wanted to separate the prisoners, and so on. try opening up your mind just a bit and you might even come up with a plausible reason yourself.
