Ukrainian communities around the world are campaigning for global recognition of a horror that killed an estimated seven to 10 million Ukrainians during the Holodomor, the devastating famine that swept the nation during 1931-1932 as a direct result of Stalin’s collectivisation and the Soviet Union’s determination to wipe out Ukrainian nationalism.

The collapse of the Soviet Union resulted in the release of previously top secret archives on the great horror. On the 75th anniversary of the famine, Ukrainians want the world to know what happened.

Interesting to see how so many socialist, for the people, societies end up like this...

Socialism / communism. Same #### different smell really. Spread the wealth. Punish the successful.. Get rid of anyone who questions your philosophy etc. There are quite a few people teaching in American colleges who idolize Marxism and ignore the history of such a governments.

Pretty much the same amount of Ukrainians where killed as where Jews in WWII. I would like to see Russia pay compensation to Ukraine as Germany does to the Jewish people for this..

And all the while American Leftists were singing the praises of the progress in the Soviet Union. Pete Seeger recently apologized for supporting and espousing Soviet communism. Some Lefty Americans love to point out Red Scares, McCarthyism, and loyalty oaths during the same period in America while totally ignoring the real atrocities commited by communists around the world.

Sad to say, but the Ukrainian Famine is just the tip of the iceberg of communist crimes.

Stalin is quoted as saying, "One death is a tragedy...a million is a statistic." The "statistics" directly attributed to world communism is staggering. They murdered and terrorized millions of people into submission.

Many years ago I was telling a Soviet immigrant from Bylorussia that my grandparents immigrated from there to America before the Bolshevik Revolution. He said, "They were very fortunate...they missed out on a lot of misery and bad history."

Yes, despots though out history have killed millions of people and all in the name some 'ism' or the other good one, religion. However, to somehow translate that into a fear of the ism or religion that the despot uses in order to justify whatever callous action he takes is just a nonsense. I wonder if this really is due to people's inability to grasp anything more complex than broad brush generalizations or an unwillingness to even try?

What is also interesting is that depending on the nature/location of the travesty you will hear people blaming the victims of devestation for not somehow preventing it or recognition that they were powerless to prevent what happened and are therefore tragic victims.

That's why I didn't say all countries should be social democracies.

I'm saying that socialism in a contemporary context has nothing to do with Soviet murder.
