Hello all,

I'm new here. I've been reading through the site for a while. Has anyone used an Immigration Attorney to file or assist with the visa process. I have seen several that report 100% success. Even if there is no guarantee, it seems to me prudent to use a professional in hopes of avoiding unnecessary delays due to my mistakes. After all, these guys deal in this paperwork nightmare everyday and 3 months ago, I didn't know what a k-1 or k-3 was.

Here in Houston, there is a large VN community. Since I will be applying for a K-1 for Chinh to come from VN, is there any good reason to go-it-alone, without an attorney? There are several in town with experience in getting visa approval from VN

Thanks for your responses and for this site.

Erik

A big proportion of members here on VJ have done the visa process themselves, without the use of a lawyer. As long as you do your research, fill out the documents correctly, and send the required documents, you will have no problems. There is so much information available here on VJ in the "Guides" and "Visa FAQ" sections and you will find the answers to all your questions there.

A lot of people who did use lawyers reported that the lawyers made costly, time-consuming errors that probably wouldn't have happened if they had done the process themselves.

It can also be frustrating to wait to hear any news from a lawyer, rather than dealing directly with the process yourself.

The choice is yours, but you are definitely capable of doing the K-1 or K-3 process on your own. Just do your research, and ask any questions you have afterwards here on VJ and you will get lots of help.

Good luck.

For many people, applying for k1 is pretty straightforward and visa journey spells it out for you. I hired an immigration attorney prior to finding out about vj. In retrospect I wouldn't have hired him for the k1 mainly cuz we really didn't need him. HE wasn't bad but still I felt at times that he wasn't that experienced and if it weren't for vj..who knows!

I used an immigration attorney with 100 percent sucess rate got my petition approved in exactly 2 months!!!! still waiting for interview! You can fill out the forms yourself alot of people do it just dont make any mistakes! Can slow it down alot that is why i used an attorney! As long as you dont make any mistakes it will be just as fast! If you get a lawyer get an immigration firm with expierience normal lawyers usally screw stuff up!

Erik.

The one i used was a waste of my time and money.he made many errors and caused delays in my K1 application. I had to refile and pay an extra refiling fee. If i were you I would do it on my own.

I never use an attorney. Plus, it's very expensive. You pay a retainer fee, plus their hourly wage. Use them only when you get a problem that you yourself cannot solve.

Here is my official "cut & paste" answer to this issue...

Unless you have some very special circumstances, hiring an attorney does nothing but drain funds better spent on yourselves and your future together. An attorney stands in the same line we do, with no time savings what so ever. The paperwork is far from complicated if you can read and follow simple instructions. Have a question? There are tons of folks here that are in your same shoes. :)

Too many here have tossed hard earned money on overpriced and mostly useless attornies. Do not feed the lawyers. It only keeps them strong causing them to breed out of control and further weakening us.

As a lot of people say, for the majority of cases there is probably no advantage to hiring a lawyer, and there is the potential for more mistakes and delays than if you just did it yourself. For the Ho Chi Minh Consulate, however, that may not be true. But only hire a lawyer who has lots of experience with that consulate and whom you are very confident will do a good job. They should be willing to take the time to answer your questions and convince you that they know what they are doing.
