a note of interest, maybe.... cell phones don't usually work at 30,000 feet or at 450 mph at low altitudes

true....but were they at that altitude all the time?

no but I bet they were going faster than is possible to make cell phone calls.

of course, they could have used the airfone, wouldn't be the first time CNN didn't get the facts right

you mean....cnn does false reporting!

There was a show on Showtime last season called "Sleeper Cell".. anyone see that?

Well 24 has been running for 5 years now - politically that show plays on right-wing xenophobia, and this idea that the ends justify the means so long as it prevents terrorism. Even if it means infringing on individiaul

They all present the view that 'anything goes' with regards to preventing terrorism even if it means infringing civil liberties or torture.

If you saw the first season (filmed in 2001-2002) there's a marked difference between that and the direction of the show subsequently. It does a pretty good (but highly exaggerated) job of illustrating how popular opinion with regards to terrorism and national security issues has degenerated into paranoia and blind hysteria.

No - but people shouldn't make the mistake of taking a fictional construction as pure fact. The calls are fact, but there are presented within a frame of interpretation - 'gap-filling' is not fact, its someone's opinion.

Seems simple to me.

Cellphones and Altitude explained:

From this morning's New York Times: "According to industry experts, it is possible to use cell phones with varying success during the ascent and descent of commercial airline flights, although the difficulty of maintaining a signal appears to increase as planes gain altitude. Some older phones, which have stronger transmitters and operate on analog networks, can be used at a maximum altitude of 10 miles, while phones on newer digital systems can work at altitudes of 5 to 6 miles. A typical airline cruising altitude would be 35,000 feet, or about 6.6 miles."

source

It is entirely possible for cell phones to work during airline flights. I've found a ton of sources that say just that.

Since I was so connected to the tragedy I really want to see it. I was so changed by that day...I want to pay tribute to those the movie represents. I will see it this weekend.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

FYI: I think perspective is important here. Yes, it was a terrible tradgedy but in the grand scheme of things - how many people die EVERY DAY from terrorist acts??

In addition, there are SO MANY Disaster movies...titanic, hotel rwanda, munich, schindler's list, any movie about slavery...I mean I can't even think of all of them there are so many...

AND, trust me, families of the victims were well taken care of financially.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!
