I speak to my son (who is almost a year old) in english, and then repeat the same exact thing in Romanian. That way he learns both phrases. I know hes only a YEAR old, but atleast when hes able to talk, he can speak and or understand both. Once his daddy is here, i will be the primary english teacher to him, while his daddy will be the primary Romanian teacher. I just felt that doing it right away, will be less confusing later, because since day one, i have been talking to him in both languages.

Ive prolly confused the poor thing

The advice many moons ago used to be NOT to teach children more than one language at a time BUT the new and correct advice is to start from birth (or before) teaching them both of your languages. The experts say that teaching them both languages from the beginning increases the chances of them becoming fluent in both languages. Both of my children are multicultural but their father never took an interest to teaching them so they don't speak his language at all.... I, on the other hand, speak Arabic to them (what little I know) frequently and both of them have picked it up tremendously :D They are 8 and 5. I have known many multicultural children who grew up in homes where more than one language was spoken who have had no problems differentiating between the two. The only time I've seen problems were with the kids whose parents did not speak English in the home and when the kids started school they were behind because the only English they knew was what they learned off the TV. So I say go ahead and start now and hey, it'll be good for the kids to be fluent in both English and Spanish as adults in the real world.

Little kids have very flexible brains... they have so much to learn about the world that it's easy for them to learn a bit more and pick up another language or two... in fact it's supposed to be MUCH easier because their language pathways aren't fixed yet and they don't have to try to 'unlearn' anything else! I wish somebody had taught me a second language when I was a toddler...
