I am new to this whole website just trying to get use to it. I have a wonderful man I met 2 years ago and he is from the wonderful country of nigeria. We are in the process of working on the visitor visa for him to come to Canada. I would really love anyone intake on the whole process time and any useful information they may have would be great.

There might be some Canadians here who could help but this is predominantly a site for family based visas to the US.

YMMV

Thanks so much I kinda thought that but my old group I was with told me there might be a few Canadians here. I know the process is a lot different in Canada then the US. I will cross my fingers that someone is around in Canada that can give me some advice.

For him to qualify for a visitor's visa to Canada, he requires much the same as for a visitor's visa to the US. Provide him with an invitation to come for a visit; be specific about the dates and the length of time of the visit; include what you will be providing (ie. accommodation, meals, transportation within Canada, etc.). He will need to apply at the Canadian Consulate for his visa. He needs to bring your letter of invitation, proof of his ability to afford the cost of the trip as well as to cover his expenses while he is in Canada, PLUS - a BIG PLUS - he will need to bring proof of sufficient ties to ensure he will return home. Proof includes documents showing he has financial ties to Nigeria - a job along with permission to leave that job for the length of the requested visit; property ownership (preferably); assets; immediate family ties, especially family members for whom he is responsible (parents, children, etc,) who are remaining behind; any other type of document that proves he has sufficient motivation to return home after the end of his visit. While you won't want to purchase tickets until after the visa is approved, include documentation showing planned departure and return dates and costs, along with an application for visitor's health insurance to cover the same requested time period. Make sure you allow sufficient time for the processing of the visa - I would plan on applying for the visa at least a month prior to the planned travel date or earlier, in case the visa is initially denied and you need to gather more evidence for a retry. I know you won't want to hear this, however, visitor visas for citizens from countries that are considered third world are very, very hard to obtain. He will really have to work hard to prove that he is indeed, only a visitor, and will be returning home after the visa.

Kathryn,

Thanks so much for your reply. I understand all what you have said to me thanks for advice. He does have really strong ties to his country own his own company so that has helped a lot and also own land and house. I have already sent a letter of invitation to him. I have heard the process in lagos to getting an interview can be anywhere from 1 month to 4 months so I sent all my supporting doc's to him a week ago. I have heard good things on visa's to Canada and bad things you really need to have strong ties to the country you are applying for. I also had every thing notazied as well and also had a letter sworn in that all my information was true. He has had visa out of the country before and he just got a 5 year visa for Europe which is really great for him I am very proud because that is really hard to come by in nigeria. I am just waiting for the results to come in from the interview.

Thanks,

You're welcome. Good luck! It sounds like he has a very good chance of getting a visitor's visa.
