So, what would happen if the Palestinians chose today to cease all aggression against Israel...no more rockets, no more homicide bombings...and chose to formally acknowledge Israel's right to exist, publically repudiating all calls for Israel to be driven into the sea, and actually followed through with this?

It's difficult to feel sorry for these people when they cheered the twin towers collapse and have actively supported hamas.

Good point...

It's difficult to feel sorry for these people when they cheered the twin towers collapse and have actively supported hamas.

Is it really difficult to believe that there are people caught up in the middle of this, who either have no involvement in what is going on, no power to do anything about it and who don't hand-clap violent madmen?

Is it really difficult to believe that?

Or is it simply easy to write off an entire population as some sort of troll under the bridge, none of whom deserve sympathy or help?

So, what would happen if the Palestinians chose today to cease all aggression against Israel...no more rockets, no more homicide bombings...and chose to formally acknowledge Israel's right to exist, publically repudiating all calls for Israel to be driven into the sea, and actually followed through with this?

What would happen if people stopped taking sides - as though one side has some sort of magical moral high ground?

IOW, you have no answer to the question? If no one decides it is time to stop the bloodshed and actually be serious about peaceful co-existence, then it will continue till one side or the other (or both) are exterminated.

If the Palestinians ended their aggression, what would Israel do? What would Palestine's future look like?

If Israel were to unilaterally cease assaults on Palestinians, what would Palestine do? What would happen to Israel?

Well there is no answer to the question is there - its clearly a complicated situation, and clearly neither side is being enabled or has any investment in changing their tactics.

What amazes me - is reading reports about humanitarian disasters and the only thing that people can respond with (that is people completely divorced from the situation, or indeed its outcome) is flippant comments along the lines that the people in the situation somehow deserve it.

I think that shows appalling ignorance of the situation and an outrageous lack of human empathy.

They gave back the Gaza Strip, but Palestinian attacks escalated. And what exactly is considered Palestinian land?

Does it include all the land comprising the state of Israel? Or is it just the lands taken by Israel as a result of the 1967 war? Precisely how much and which lands must Israel surrender for Palestine to cease all attacks on Israel?

There's no solution in the "what if's". But there are certain day-to-day realities - as the OP article discusses...

So, there is no way to end the day-to-day realities?

I would say that many people, including the folks in the OP article (and other groups) are trying to do something to alleviate the conditions. Everyone else seems content simply to judge and moralise from afar.

The Road Map by the quartet, The Arab League Peace Plan from Beirut 2002, Unofficial Geneva Accords of Israeli-Palestinians explicitly say that Israel go back to pre 1967 border and stop all settlement activites. Arab League Peace Plan ask also says all Arab countries will normalize relationship with Israel, should Israel goes back to pre 1967 border. So there are some good peace plans on the table which guarantee State of Israel side by side with its Arab neighbors. I am afraid that the current cycle of violece will continue as long as there is no peace deal like above. There are innocent people from both sides who are caught in the middle of this violence and the military might alone can not bring peace.

While sending aid is admirable and necessary, it can only temporarily alleviate the symptoms, while doing little to eliminate the disease and thus the need for aid in the first place. Should permanent solutions not be sought?

Of course. Just seems that the onus of responsibility is always put on one side.

They cheer in the streets after terrorists attacks.... sad. But I'm sure Israel is to blame.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
