Why is it that most of the world's terrorists are __________ ?

Are they - or is it just the ones we're interested in?

They seem to be doing the most damage. We can split hairs but in your heart you know the truth.

Islamic terrorism gets the most press because it has transcended international borders. But it dishonest to say that all terrorism is related to islamic fundamentalism.

IRAN'S largest selling newspaper announced today it was holding a contest on cartoons of the Holocaust in response to the publishing in European papers of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

"It will be an international cartoon contest about the Holocaust," said Farid Mortazavi, the graphics editor for Hamshahri newspaper - which is published by Teheran's conservative municipality.

He said the plan was to turn the tables on the assertion that newspapers can print offensive material in the name of freedom of expression.

"The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let's see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he said.

Iran's fiercely anti-Israeli regime is supportive of so-called Holocaust revisionist historians, who maintain the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as well as other groups during World War II has been either invented or exaggerated.

Oh please. The Arab world taking stabs at the holocaust is nothing new. Why do they even try to pretend that it's just done to turn the tables? Denying or downplaying the holocaust and publishing tasteless and offensive material (including cartoons) is daily routine in the Arab world. Pffft. Who are they trying to fool?

Well, to be fair, he didn't. "Most" (as in 51% - 99%) is not the same as "all" (as in 100%).

There will be NO burning of embassies. I can promise you that. I even bet the holocaust cartoons get published in western media. The west is tolerant.

I didn't say "ALL". You keep saying that. Even when my quote is directly above you. I have NEVER said ALL. Do a search on the old off-topic.

Of course there won't be. Otherwise we would have burning embassies for decades as that is how long the Arab media has published holocaust denying and holocaust degrading cartoons. Trying to pretend that this is something new or a response to the Muhammad cartoons may fly in that part of the world. I can surf the net and see the smut they published for years...

This was exactly my point - if people wandered the streets yelling 'yay slavery, bring back segregationsim' would people stand for it? No, I don't think they would.

So why is THIS - the burning, the calling for mass murder (on the placards) tolerated?

In the UK we don't allow the BNP (facist party) to wander through Brixton ( which in case you don't know has a large black population) spreading their filth and racism and calling for 'death to all people of color' and waving signs that say 'lets have more Stephen Lawrences' (murdered black teenager)

nor should we allow this either (the placards the burning of embassies).

I dont see that as freedom of speech its incitement to racial hatred and it achieves NOTHING except give fuel to the fire of facists and the 'let's bomb arab countries all to hell' brigade.

Yup. That's what I reckon too. I think the BNP are a bunch of shallow, small-minded, offensive, blinkered a$$holes. :)

What on Earth is going on here then? Are there no functional adults left? Don't tell me - the violence of these protestors killed all the decent, functional grown up people and the country is now being run by a bunch of spoiled bratty kids.

Because that is the only conceivable way, surely, that this could go on any longer, and that the "tables" could be "turned" on anyone. C'mon people, IT'S A CARTOON! Whatever happened to "turn the other cheek"? What happened to being bigger than your offender? This is the most ridiculous, dumb, destructive response to anything I've seen in recent years.

Isn't it amazing that the Western world does NOT protest when reporters are beheaded in cold blood, or when Western hostages have their throat slit by extremists. Now THAT would be worth a protest. How disgusting that these folk continue to use their religion as an excuse to wreak havoc.

I honestly feel like going out and protesting the freakin' protesting...

Me too

Something I wonder...as far as I know, there hasn't been this violent protesting going on yet inside the US(unless someone knows something I don't) relating to this cartoon. Is that because we don't have as many islamic hardcore fundamentalists in the US, but more mainstream followers? Or do we, but they know they can't get away with doing this here? I know there are a lot of Muslims in the US yet we aren't seeing this craziness here..hopefully it won't happen at all relating to this cartoon thing. But I am just wondering if it's because there are mostly moderate or secular muslims in the US, or if any fundamentalists here know they can't get away with this kind stuff...I don't doubt there are people inside our country who wish to do us harm, but they usually keep a low profile so they don't get caught before they try to do something big (like the hijackers of Sept 11). I am not connecting every Muslim in the US with this, I am just talking about the fundamentalists who would wish harm on us.

Just out of interest and not meant as a provocation at all, why do American newspapers not publish the cartoons? Are they intimidated or what?

The reason I'm wondering is because of the way the conflict is portrayed in the media, namely as an insult to free speech rights. But by not publishing the cartoons while writing about them extensively, the media is speaking double-speak. I disagree with the publication in Jyllands Posten, but I'm totally in favor of the reprinting in European papers; it's their right and their duty to keep people fully informed.

Yes, generally, it seems that way. However, the Philly Inquirer, for example, posted at least one of them and about two dozen Muslims showed up to picket the paper's premises. Maybe a developing story but I doubt that 9/11 threats or the like will emerge in any of the protests.

Yes but how can you even say 'most'? Certainly its true to say that the terrorism that the US is predominantly concerned with is related to islamic fundamentalism, but on a global level...? It would be interesting to see some stats on that. Different countries, different concerns.

I just think 'most' is appropriate. Prove me wrong. I will gladly say I'm wrong if the number is <51%. I should clarify my statement... Most of the worlds terrorist 'acts' are by people of the ___________ religion.
