The spread of Islam occurred during a period of history when the accepted means of spreading an idea was through conquest and tribal warfare. Not surprisingly, the spread of Islam did incorporate these elements. You don't really need to read the Quran or have Muslim friends/family to know that.

A Belgian-Dutch Islamic political organization posted anti-Jewish cartoons on its website in response to the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that appeared in Danish papers last year and offended many Muslims.

This is what that looks like - Holocaust denial pure:

That's, of course, on top of the everyday tasteless stabs of the Arab press against the West, Israel and the Jewish people. Following the principle "Do as I say, not as I do", there's quite obviously no practicing of self-censorship or sensibility towards other (especially the Jewish) faiths in the Arab world as it now demands from the other side.

Kind of hard to take the ravaging and apparently quite hypocritical mob seriously seeing that they are really only being presented with what they're quite comfortable dishing out on a regular basis. My take is: If you dish it, you gotta be able to stomach it, too.

Anyhow, seems that it's about time to torch their embassies now?

It's cherrypicking the Muslim doctrine.

People always cherry pick.

Islamic conquerors from Central Asia used to raid the lands they referred to as "Hindustan" (modern Afghanistan through modern India) on a regular basis. In their own courts, they said they were doing it because Hindustan was the land of the kufr (infidel) but in reality what they really did was loot money/jewels and rape women.

Think about the Crusades for a minute. Christians claimed they were doing it for their Lord but history has not judged their actions kindly. They didn't act very Christian at all.

Coming closer to our present time, Hindu terrorists in Sri Lanka regularly gun down Muslim children because they want to maintain demographic dominance in northern and eastern Sri Lanka. They say they do it for God, too. They even host communal religious festivities and help young Hindu children learn reading, writing and arithmetic. But it is clear that they cherry pick

Cherrypicking - it's what people do. There's nothing sillier than people who say Islam is peace. Islam is a community of millions or billions of people, and no such claim can be made of a community that large.

Is "peace" in Islam (as understood outside America) the same concept that it is in the West? I.e., groups of people who consider themselves equal to one another, and agreeing to disagree amicably and to live and let live? Or is it "peace" resulting from subjugation?

That's particularly interesting as I was under the impression

that the Arab world maintained that 9/11 was really a Jewish plot.

In this cartoon, from Al-Watan newspaper in Qatar (June 23, 2002),

Ariel Sharon is shown watching on the sidelines as an Israeli plane

crashes into New York’s World Trade Center. The Arabic words

alongside the Twin Towers are “The Peace.” This cartoon restates

the widely held myth in the Arab world that Israel and the Jews

were responsible for the 9/11 attacks which were in fact carried

out by al-Qaeda.

And yet that's true of most of the world's major religions. Religion served the initial purpose of raising mankind out of barbarism and established a modicum of social order.

I have no sympathy for the racist, flag burning extremist ####### who burn embassies, or set off explosives in metropolitan areas, I just don't believe those people are representative of the millions upon millions of law abiding muslims around the world who don't do these things.

How can anyone say 'its the religion' when they have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of that religion at all? Does anyone consider that the reason that many middle eastern countries are feudal dictatorships has something to do with cultural and political factors quite separate from the moral teachings of a religion?

And yet the same boring, idiotic arguments keep popping up. Specifically, if they (muslims) are so committed to peace, and terrorism isn't why don't they speak out? Fact is they have and continue to speak out. Just as our media is extremely selective about which opinions it chooses to report, we are apparently also very selective about the messages we choose to hear.

Warning: The following is just an anecdote.

A few months ago, at our local grocery store, I ran into a Muslim ex-colleague of mine. We worked together a few years ago on a project for a common client. I did not recognize him at first, since his appearance had changed. He had a beard and he was dressed in traditional gear for Pakistani men. Being the insensitive ####### that I am, I laughed and asked him ####### happened? He got all serious and told me, in confidence, that after 9/11, he became proud to be Muslim because it showed him that Muslims were finally strong and players on the world stage. Anyway, then I had to go and he said we should keep in touch and I told him I'm sure I'll run into him again at the store since we both live in the same town. I haven't seen him since and I still do not know if he was just fukcing with my head or not

All media is suspect. Our problem is an an "unquestioning" reliance on western media. There is more going on in the world each day than merely what can be squeezed into the headlines of a one hour TV programme.

Gotta say I agree with fishdude somewhat there.

How would it be taken if a western non-muslim person paraded down the street screaming 'death to the followers of allah' or 'lets have more wars in Iran' and burning middle eastern flags.

It wouldn't happen would it?

Do we allow white supremacists (god help us all if these people reckon they are the pinnacle of the white race..I think IQ points just dropped across the board from just THINKING about that) to go marching around holding up placards saying 'yay slavery'?

Or facists advertising 'bring back the gas chambers'?

We do not.

So why do we allow this?

Our problem is an an "unquestioning" reliance on western media.

This ain't the western media - it's the Arab-European League. The others are cartoons as they have been published in the Arab media. Didn't see anyone protesting the lack of sensitivity and respect then. Neither have I seen them set Saudi and Qatar embassies on fire. I have a problem with a mob unable to take what they dish out. It's dishonest to say the least...

So why do we allow this?

For free speech??

Allow what? The cartoons? Seeing what the Arab world is comfortable with publishing and taking stabs against the West and Israel, one would think it's fair game. Only now have they come to find out that self-censorship is needed.

Practice what you preach. Then I'll take you seriously...
