Hi to everyone...

I need some help...

We are working in my AOS's forms and I'm confused about what name I should submit in the forms... I want change my first name (because is too long) and used my husband's last name...

I called to USCIS and they said I should submit all AOS forms with my new name, but... the answer include my new first name too?? I'm not sure about my first name...

Somebody in same situation??

Any advice??

Should I submit AOS forms with my new first and last name?

Or

Just change my last name and keep my old first name and submit AOS form in this way and after get my GC change my first name?

Thanks!!!

Use your complete married name. Changing the name on your GC after its issued costs money.

I don't think you can change your first name with AOS. That would probably cause confusion for USCIS (which would not be good for you!) but if you want to take your husband's last name for yours instead of your maiden name, then you should file: your first name + your new last name. Your marriage certificate will prove the name change.

I know what it is like with the first name. In Sweden I've actually changed my first name but it's still in the same order so my Swedish "first name" looks like my middle name on "paper". To make things less difficult (or so I thought) I decided to use both as my first name on the AOS but I'm not sure that was smart. I now have a number of different versions of my name, especially since what looks like my first name is a "double name", like Ann-Margaret. I've seen at least 3 different versions so far in this process. It's a complete mess. But I figure that as long as my green card matches my Swedish passport I should be fine. I agree that you probably should not make too much of a change now. This process can be difficult enough without adding additional issues to it.

Thanks for the info Kezzie. It's good to know that I might be able to get it right in 3 years or so. :)

AS far as I am aware you can not change your first name... only your last name.... I know you can total change your name when you become a citizen.... or you can do it through the courts...

Kez

State dependant... My wife changed the spelling on her first name, added a middle name and changed her last name when we got married.... This became her new "legal" name and that is the name she used on her AOS documents and all approved without incident.

We had a similar situation. My wife had only two names as is common in Indonesia. So in getting married, she took my last name, and her previous last name become her middle name.
