Probably because you haven't eaten today.

On a side note, my stupid bil broke my computer again. This makes the third time he's messed it up. It's getting a bit old. He was supposed to be buying it from us but hasn't done that yet. I told Javi last night Jaime can have the dang thing and I'm buying a new one. He better not get anywhere near my new one. So, I'm going computer shopping this weekend. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should get? Nothing too expensive but something worth it. And certainly nothing with Vista on it.

Ooh fun! Do you want a desktop or a laptop?

I love my mac, but a lot of people are anti-apple I know.......

PS happy birthday :)

We'd like a desktop. We don't really do that much with it other than cruise the internet. We do have some programs on there for Javi's business, invoices and stuff like that. We don't play many games on it other than just the few we might download from yahoo or something. I'm not anti-apple but I've never had a mac before.

Thanks!

Here's something to think about: get a Mac that runs both MacOSX and Windows. They're readily available. Since you had a computer that was running WinXP before, you should have the install disc. All you'd need to do is get the proper Mac (it'd already have OSX on it) and then install your copy of XP on it as well. Just make sure the hard drive is partitioned for a dual-boot setup or it won't work properly.

Theoretically, you could do the same with a PC as well -- dual-boot it with Vista and XP or even replace Vista with XP (but both of those options might require more work since most PC vendors wouldn't anticipate you opting for a dual-boot arrangement). However, all of the options described could be done, assuming you have your install disc for XP. The hardest part would be downloading and installing the two service packs and updates all over again.

I love my mac but I only run OSX. I want a laptop though (not a macbook). But if you really don't use it for much other than internet and some things for Javi's work it might not be worth it (they can be pricey).

And DPX....YOU HAVE OOLONG as your avi! I love him ;)

Yeah, I noticed they are a little pricey. I was looking at them just now. I think I'll have to stick with a PC. I just hope I can find one that doesn't have Vista on it.

Hum, that sounds really complicated. I'm sure it's less complicated in real life than it is to read it. The only problem I would have is finding my XP disk. I'm sure it's around somewhere but there's no telling where.

It's not that complicated, really. As you said, it sounds more complex than it is, but you do need to know a thing or two about computers in order to get it all working properly. In any event, having your XP disc is important if you want to run XP, since finding that OS is becoming more and more difficult (and will only get even worse, as time goes on).

A simpler thing you could do is merely use MacOSX or Linux (the latter being much more difficult for many) and purchase the CrossOver software by CodeWeavers which is available for both Mac and Linux productivity and gaming software. It's not an emulator, but re-implements the Win32 API so Windows software thinks it's being installed on a Windows operating system. It costs $39.95 for the standard version and $69.95 for the professional version.

Would it be necessary? That depends. There's always dual-booting and Vista will become more supported as time goes on too. There's plenty of software being released nowadays for MacOSX (including some Microsoft products, such as Word and others) and even Linux is gaining more popularity, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you have lots of experience with computers.

However, unless you use a dual-booting system, you'll never have complete access to everything on Windows if you use another operating system, which is what CrossOver is attempting to change. Is it perfect? Not at all. There are still quite a few programs that either don't have full functionality or none to speak of, but there are also many that work just as well as if in Windows too.

In your situation, I'd recommend either a dual-boot system of XP/Vista or OSX/XP. That would probably allow the greatest degree of flexibility.

Booty, most companies I've worked for regularly throw out PCs with older operating systems. We haven't started our upgrade to Vista yet but I am sure many companies are. If you know anyone who works in IT, ask them if they're throwing out any pre-Vista machines.

I might just do that. I was going to talk to my IT guy anyway. ASU will fix personal computers for you if you will bring them in. I'm gonna bring my old one in so they can fix it, if it's fixable, so my bil can keep it and won't be using our new one. I'll ask them if they have any old ones.

You could put a keylogger on it, so you could track what he's doing and find his mistakes. You could also see what dirty websites he's viewing then too, but that'd be merely be a beneficial form of entertainment. :innocent:

I think that's the problem. I think he's visiting less than great sites. I have our computer set to delete history as soon as you close it out. I could change that then I'd be able to catch him.

I'm heading out now to get my hair done. I'll catch up with you all tomorrow since my computer at home is dead.

Good luck on that finding one without Vista thang... LOL

We bought a new pooter this weekend...an Acer. The computer with 3 G of RAM and 250G hard drive was just over $400. The monitor was separate. But we did also get an external hard drive with another 500G for under $100 I think. I'm very happy with it. And so far using Vista hasn't been a problem.

we bought an Acer last summer from Walmart.. it came with with everything, flat screen monitor, keyboard, mouse.....it has 1 GB of ram and 160 GB hardrive... and cost about 500 to 600 bucks.... and it has Vista and I have really no problems with it so far...

I was hopeful that the Vista quirks had been worked out before we had to buy. Still crossing fingers...
