Question 4 anyone who has gone to the Carnival in NY: Are the events like the Steel Band Panorama, Dimanche Gras, and Gal Farm that I see posted on the wiadc website free to the public? I know there are events and concerts that you have 2 pay for, but the website doesn't say what (if any) of the events are free. Just wanna know how to budget my money for this trip. Also, will anyone up here be staying in NJ at that time?

Hi Mrs. Palmer...you can check out these links for ideas. Also checkout Brooklyn museum for activities. They usually have steel plan drumming there and other places in Brooklyn. Try to google Brooklyn and labor day or carnival activities and see what you get. Enjoy your stay in NYC!!!! Have fun and be careful.

Caribbean Choice: Carnival 2008, NYC

Wingate: Jouvert (Juve) Activities

Y'all must be reading my mind today, i was just talking to my friend about this same subject earlier. I really have my heart on getting married in JA, but of course with the visa process, since we are planning on doing the K1 that cant happen. We have discussed having a NONLEGAL ceremony on the beach in May( which is what i want, i want to have my friends fly down to be there) and then just going the justice of the peace route when he actually gets here. I have heard others mention that you have to be careful with the nonlegal ceremony route( im not sure why) im thinking that if you showed pictures( that the Embassy, may think it is a legal marriage and deny yoU????? Im just grasping at straws here) Can anyone clarify for me? ( i mean obviously, i wouldnt be stupid enough to present those photos at my interview, so im just wondering.

You can still get married in JA even when file a K1. Upon visa Approval, You can travel down to JA, have your wedding and then travel back to the US together. Many people do that. There is a girl on the Sub-Saharan forum who filed a K1 and is in Ghana right now preparing for her wedding in a few days. If you have anyone in JA that can help you with the planning, you can start collecting all the materials you need. It is very possible! I say go for your dream wedding

This is the exact definition of visa fraud. The K-1 is a fiance visa. You MUST enter the US as a fiance, marry here, and adjust after. Do not do this for any reason.

Hey Asante,

I thought u have to get married in the US

Hi Hotlegz,

Nope, not at all! I know several people who have gone or are planning to go back to their SO's country to get married. It's usually cheaper and you can have a more lavish wedding.

Just as long as your SO is approved for his fiance visa, you are free to marry in his home country or here. So you do have options.

This is not correct information.

Asante ok ! so ur husband is from Ghana ?

Yes girl. The Maroon in my screen name represents me because I'm a Maroon.

If you guys ever have the chance in this lifetime to go to Ghana. I highly recommend it. There is soooooo much love for JA in Ghana its ridiculous. I was so surprised when I saw di taxi dem wit Jamaica flag pon dem. They absolutely love roots reggae out there and there is quite a few Jamaicans living there. Rita Marley even has a huge mansion out there. I went to see it on my first trip out to Ghana.

Asante;

My family also come from a Maroon background. Some of my family still live in the hills from wayyyyy back in the day. My grandmother's mother half Syrian and half Maroon was absolutely beautiful will long hair. My family is so well mixed and I love it. When I was in highschool people made fun of my big lips and big nose and always had something negative to say about my long flowing hair, because it was not a weave (nothing wrong with that)...I just grew tired of the horsehair jokes. All through highschool I did presentations on my background and heritage that stand true "Out of Many One People" a so it go, smadi correct mi if m wrang.

Hey Ladies, that is kind of what i am planning, we will get married officially in the states in front of a JP, but im kind of planning a commitment type ceremony, where his family can be present and a few of my friends and family. I can do it on the beach, and still feel like i had something special.

Honey;

That sounds nice. We had a party, actually too many parties. The engagement party was like a commitment ceremony for us. It was beautiful. Don't know if you've every watch the sunset from Doctor's Cave Beach in Mobay. Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will be beautiful.

I'm still thrown with the getting married in your home country after the interview and visa is in hand. As it may not be illegal (as Ashante says)...I just seems (not sure what word to use)...whatever you decide make sure we see the pics.

From USA.gov

What Must Happen After Getting the Fiancé(e) Visa?

After getting the fiancé(e) visa, your fiancé(e) enters the U.S. through a U.S immigration port-of-entry. The U.S. immigration official gives your fiancé(e) instructions on what to do when he/she enters the United States. You must get married within 90 days of your fiancé(e)’s entry into the United States.

After marriage, your spouse must file Form I-485 Application to Register Permanent Residence or to Adjust Status with the USCIS office that serves the area where you live in the United States. You must fill out the Affidavit of Support, Form I-864, with the USCIS for your spouse's application to become a lawful permanent resident (LPR). See Permanent Resident at the Department of Homeland Security's, USCIS internet site.

These are the rules, ladies. Do not listen to what is being said tonight. That is not correct and is visa fraud. You WILL have to produce a marriage certificate to AOS. And, if it's not in the US, you will be denied, your then husband will be sent back, banned for at least 10 years, maybe a lifetime. If you are lucky enough to be banned for only 10 years, you will then file for a CR1.

Please refrain from peddling mis-information.

YOU CANNOT marry BEFORE arriving in the States on a K1.

I would advise you to go and do some RESEARCH before ADVISING people. Do you have any idea how much your INCORRECT advice could set someone back????

Thank you. I just said the same.

Trelawny, you are so right. Knowing your history is so important and I thank God that I know mine. People say and do a lot of cruel things outta ignorance and it is a shame. I went to school in the US and I can tell you about the many ignorant things that come out of people's mouth. People are shocked when they see a dark skinned person with long hair  Dem all pull it fi si if it real.

Some one in my has a whole manuscript tracing back our family to the Ashanti's of Ghana. Maroons are a direct decedent of the Ashanti's. I know you heard that the Maroons were warriors... well, the Ashanti's back in the days were fierce in Ghana. They too were warriors who were hard to defeat.

A friend of mine who is also a Maroon, remembers her granny saying words that she knew did not derive from any English words she knew. When she asked my cousins what some of those words meant he was able to translate for her. And she said that the translation made sense in the context that her grandmother used it.

In Ghana they talk about Anansie the spider too....They refer to him as Kwaku Anansie....same stories, same message. There are so many similarities that its crazy...I mow understand even more why roots reggae speaks highly on Africa. It's pretty cool.

So I guess we are truly Sistrens then :thumbs:

A'rite...mi glad seh smadi else seet. My friend is sitting next to me and giving me an earful. She won't tell me details, but honey she say no dweet.

I understand that information given to others is very important here because people can very well get sent back as you have put it.

I am giving her information as I have been told by several people who have done just that. They have their ceremony in their SO's home country upon visa approval and when they both arrive in the US they do a civil service marriage. You can however have the ceremony in your SO's country first. Its semantics.... some people choose to do a civil service wedding in the US and then go back to their country for a ceremony (which you can call a party or or an engagement or whatever) or they do it the other way around.

I apologize if I was not clear in my other postings so I will be clear now: Yes you still have to be "officially" married here in the US.

I was not offering information with the intention to mislead anyone.

I also said

If you need a second opinion, you can post the question in a new thread in order to get other VJ member's opinions and experience.

It will only take a second of your time and people are really quick to respond.

Good luck! star_smile.gif

If you disagree with something that someone says, it is better to address the disagreement in a more diplomatic fashion. We are all here to help each other.

Sorry for the confusion for the rest of you...Trelawny, I did not see your other post...had I seen it b4 I would have went back and made myself more clear. Thank you for being respectful even though you did not agree with me.

What they did was commit visa fraud. When caught, there will be very stiff penalties.

JAE means no harm. She is making sure to point out that the information you are providing is incorrect and protecting the people on here who are desperate to be with their SO's by any means. In the end, this could hurt many and set them back 10 years or more. We care about these people and do not want anyone to make this grave mistake.

I agree with JAE and I urge you to please not repeat things you have heard unless you verify them by officials channels. The USCIS page, the Jamaican web site, all visa information pages state that a K-1 is a fiance visa. As such, it means the person issues such a visa MUST be a fiance when they step foot into the US. It states the marriage MUST take place in the US. A certified marriage certificate MUST be included in the AOS paperwork.

I think her usage of gigantic words, which I normally hate and petition against, are justified in this case. It was necessary.

I apologize if I was not clear in my other postings so I will be clear now: Yes you still have to be "officially" married here in the US.

If my NON DIPLOMATIC answer set RIGHT what you through your admittedly POOR CHOICE of words implied, I would say the same thing in the SAME way, time and time again.

I am really not concerned with your feelings, but with the WELFARE of people who rely on advice here.

Please don't tell me how to address a disagreement.

We are here to help, but spreading mis-information is not by any means help.

Come on JAE. You were a little harsh in your delivery. I think thats all she was saying. It seemed like you were yelling at her, and I think it was just a mis understanding of reading that she meant a religious ceremony and not a legal one.

I don't think she was harsh. She was trying to save whoever may take that misinformation as truth.

I was most definitely yelling, to make sure EVERYONE reading it realized that you CANNOT get married before coming up.

For me, it's playing with people's LIVES to suggest otherwise.

I could not agree more here.

If you were new here and took this advice, you would be so angry that someone had not told you differently.
