4.11)...My alien fiancee has been issued a K-1 visa. Can we get married abroad and then come back together to the US with the K-1?

A...No. The alien must NOT be married when s/he enters the US on a K-1 visa. Also, if using the K-1, the couple must marry in the US within 90 days of the alien entering on the K-1.

(FAQ Note: Some couples arrange to have a non legal ceremony prior to the fiance(e) leaving their home country, in order to satisfy the wishes of family, or to have a celebration if the family is unable to travel to the US for a wedding.

Jawi, no disrespect to my african sistren, but i let them take my braids out one time !!!! never again in life, do u hear me... true enough she got all my braids out in about 1 hours time, but she was a-combing and a pulling, i was worried she was thinning my hair out, but i couldnt tell since it was so nappy, i then went to my beautician to get my hair done and i swear to god :o it looked like i had a bad case of MALE PATTERN BALDNESS! she had snatched all my little hair out my head, so now i just set aside 4- days and take them down bit by bit and camouflage my styles with hats until it is all out

Eeehhnnn! Mi have a good wan...and mi nuh let NOONE else touch mi head. Sorry bout dat.

You can still get married in JA even when file a K1. Upon visa Approval, You can travel down to JA, have your wedding and then travel back to the US together. Many people do that. There is a girl on the Sub-Saharan forum who filed a K1 and is in Ghana right now preparing for her wedding in a few days. If you have anyone in JA that can help you with the planning, you can start collecting all the materials you need. It is very possible! I say go for your dream wedding :thumbs:

Please refrain from peddling mis-information.

YOU CANNOT marry BEFORE arriving in the States on a K1.

I would advise you to go and do some RESEARCH before ADVISING people. Do you have any idea how much your INCORRECT advice could set someone back????

A'rite...mi glad seh smadi else seet. My friend is sitting next to me and giving me an earful. She won't tell me details, but honey she say no dweet.

I understand that information given to others is very important here because people can very well get sent back as you have put it.

I am giving her information as I have been told by several people who have done just that. They have their ceremony in their SO's home country upon visa approval and when they both arrive in the US they do a civil service marriage. You can however have the ceremony in your SO's country first. Its semantics.... some people choose to do a civil service wedding in the US and then go back to their country for a ceremony (which you can call a party or or an engagement or whatever) or they do it the other way around.

I apologize if I was not clear in my other postings so I will be clear now: Yes you still have to be "officially" married here in the US.

I was not offering information with the intention to mislead anyone.

If you need a second opinion, you can post the question in a new thread in order to get other VJ member's opinions and experience.

It will only take a second of your time and people are really quick to respond.

Good luck! star_smile.gif

Sorry for the confusion for the rest of you...Trelawny, I did not see your other post...had I seen it b4 I would have went back and made myself more clear. Thank you for being respectful even though you did not agree with me.

Oh, I didnt see this. JAE, a wha appen tuh yuh?! Yuh gwaan yell at di gyal suh?

Hey Lita;

I'm not sure if it was you that provided the information, but it was on natural haircare products. My friend is in a biracial relationship and his poor wife cannot manage the girls hair. He has 4 girls and she never combs there hair out. All she does is wash it and it'a dangeled mess. It took me 3 hours to comb out his oldest daugther's hair and he had no idea her hair was that long. Any suggestions on products.\?

Come on JAE. You were a little harsh in your delivery. I think thats all she was saying. It seemed like you were yelling at her, and I think it was just a mis understanding of reading that she meant a religious ceremony and not a legal one.

I was most definitely yelling, to make sure EVERYONE reading it realized that you CANNOT get married before coming up.

For me, it's playing with people's LIVES to suggest otherwise.

I agree with JaEnglish. I mean we and she come from some of the worse countries to try and get a legit visa. There is SO MUCH fraud...and people following bad advice (no matter how well intentioned the person giving the advice). We have families that will be separated from their loved ones for LIFE in Jamaica because they thought they could pay for expedited interview dates...now they face LIFETIME BANS.

The information on VJ is a luxury...the MAJORITY of people filing never come here...and don't realize this type of resource exists. If you make a statement about breaking a well known rule in the process...you should be capable of making it with the law or legal loophole that will make it so.

Lita/JAE/Honey/Ashante;

This is what happened to my friend;

She was given bad advice. She got married after her visa was approved and in hand. She had a large religious ceremony. Noone told her about a civil ceremony in Jamaica and I had no idea she had done this until after the fact. When she came to the states with her fiance (against better advice) they were told to register their overseas marriage at the local courthouse where they lived (which is what they did)...well, guess what marriage certificate they turned in with the AOS...the one from Jamaica. The courthouse gave them something, but they were told not to submit that. That was 2006. She still waiting on AOS.
