Fair enough. I'd agree that it's archaic and it's alien to my way of thinking as well. I guess I'm not seeing how it's oppressive since it's not like it's some extreme forced segregation where *all* the gyms are single sex or *all* the dormitories are single sex and one has no opportunity to interact in a mixed environment. I think if people choose to self-segregate then let them.

Well the oppressive part lies in the requirement that women have to dress in a certain way to be deemed 'modest'. While that is a personal choice that anyone can sign up to, to have this sentiment legitamised by a place of learning adopting a practice that not only allows for this practice, but restricts the rights of others in order to allow for the practice makes me uncomfortable.

I agree it's quite difficult to negotiate a line that accomodates the genuine feelings of one group while unsuring that the rights of another group are not infringed.
