I just wanted to share with you my experience with expired green card. Since I travel a lot I decided to join flyclear program which let's you go faster through the airport security. In order to qualify, one needs to pay (duh) and get the DHS security clearance. Well, they told me I can't join right now, because my green card is expired. Even though I explained that the letter is *extending* my status and that it was issued pretty much by the very same government agency, no avail. I just feel like that when you are ‘between cards’ you are basically in the loophole. Very disappointed.

I think you're under the mistaken impression that these "civil servants" are as savvy about this process as you are. They are not! In fact their ignorance is oftentimes astounding.

Welcome to the U.S.A. and your awakening to the efficiency and competency of the federal bureaucracies……..Unbelievably there are some that want these yahoos to supervise our medical insurance!

OP, try to make an INFOPASS appointment and see if they can give you an I-551 stamp in your passport. Perhaps the DHS office issuing the security clearance will accept the stamp as proof of your continued legal status.

08/17/08: Mailed N400 to TSC

08/19/08: USPS attempted delivery

08/20/08: TSC received N400

08/21/08: TSC cashed check

09/02/08: Received NOA...........Priority date: 08/20/08

..............................................Notice date : 08/22/08

09/02/08: Received Biometrics Notification

09/18/08: Biometrics completed - Charlotte DO

10/24/08: Received Interview Letter

12/08/08: Interview @ 1:00pm. APPROVED!

01/05/09: Oath Ceremony 10:00AM. Now officially a USC!!!
