We did not use a lawyer, and VJ is hands down the greatest community I have ever been a part of on the internet. This place was there for me every step of the way whenever I had a question big or small. Not all of us are suited to go through AOS on our own though, and those people should consider a lawyer as an option.

That being said, no one here is a lawyer and making the decision whether to hire one or not can only be made by you. If you do get a lawyer, do your research on them and make sure its the right one for you. I have read too many horror stories about lawyers on this site. I considered hiring one as well and consulted with a few but at the end of the day, I felt confident enough in myself to do it on my own.

Sample bias here, though. People who used a lawyer successfully likely didn't come looking for VJ.

Rather like concluding that all American marriages are international because that's all that's here on VJ.

Fact, people who hired a lawyer paid money and it's not cheap change, lawyers don't work for free, if the OP wants to spend more well it's up to her/him. The point here is to avoid spending more than the already huge expenses carried by the greencard process, medical, plane tickets, and economic support before he/she actually receives the EAD etc etc. If she came here is because she/he needs advice, and she/he is asking for it, as you said "People who used a lawyer successfully likely didn't come looking for VJ" NEWS FLASH, she is in VJ asking for advice.

we hired a lawyer because we weren't even sure where to start. it was less stressful since i wasn't worried about me or my husband making a small mistake on filling out the papers and having our case denied.
