In the name of all role playing nerds, RIP, Gary. (F)

Ernest Gary Gygax ( July 27, 1938 – March 4, 2008) was an American writer and game designer, best known for co-creating the pioneering role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) with Dave Arneson, and co-founding the company Tactical Studies Rules with Don Kaye in 1974. Gygax is generally acknowledged as the father of the role-playing game.[2]

/raises hand.

I was (and still am I guess) a nerd. When I was a teen, my weekly D&D game was what got me out from under my abusive father for a few hours a night. It opened up a huge, creative area of my brain that is probably responsible for me not being a complete waste and a drain on society. I never met the man but he had a huge impact on how my life turned out.

Hope his journey into the West is filled with natural 20's...

R.I.P. Gary. Thanks for all the fun times! You did change my life a small, but meaningful way. For this I thank you!

I still have all the books. But nobody to play with. Time is a problem too. I wish I could play it again.

My beloved Joy is here, married and pregnant!

Baby due March 28, 2009

Wow... RIP.

I can remember a few all-nighters in high school throwing dice around...

Who wants to DM here in OT now?

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

LOL...I remember getting into arguments with my friend, whose character was a Lawful Good Paladin, but he kept wanting to take other party member's things because he was stronger than they were. :P

zomg that takes me waaaaaay back. I've been in some EPIC alignment arguments.

:P The DM really made difference as to how good the experience would be. Last summer, I volunteered to join in on some role playing that a writer was using to build a story from for a video game, and it was really good. We continued the game through company emails. There's something to be said about role playing in its various forms. I can understand why actors are drawn to acting.

:P The DM threatened to make him roll to see if his character would go through an alignment change. Paladins were supposed to chivalrous, do-gooders...not pilfering.

RIP.

The first Gygax game I had was Gamma World. Then I got D&D and started a dice collection. PC and console RPG games sucked me in from there and now games like World of Warcraft are still pastimes I enjoy.

Still remember as a kid my mom saw some 20/20 or 60 minutes show about the evils of D&D and kids role playing turning into reality and killing their parent's or something and she destroyed some good stuff I had collected.

Never met the man, but his creations and gaming contributions will live on.

I never played much D'n'D, but the new SW edition was based off D'n'D 3rd edition rules, and in my opinion what is the finest video game ever created was based on D'n'D (Baldur's Gate 2) - so it has indirectly led me to many happy times.

He was certainly influenced by JR Tolkien and folklore. Most people probably will never realize what an influence he has had on modern gaming.

Just can't resist... so all those wargames and tactics boil down to rolling special dice.... ay ay ay aaaayyyy... lol J/K

Seriously now, I think that paladin was probably not reeeeally a paladin since I think there was a rule where Paladins were lawful (good or evil). Maybe the particular rule set being used would have made the character a variant...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
