Total blasphemy.

Why? Is it possible that God spoke to Moses and he was under a narcotic influence simultaneously? If not, why not?

Sure, and it's possible the Moon is made of green cheese, but I wouldn't bet on it.

So if it's possible - albeit a long shot, in your opinion - where's the blasphemy?

Hallucinogens would not be unheard of in religious practice.

But this does lead one to wonder if there were originally eleven commandments, the eleventh being a very weepy... "Dude.... I love you man!"

High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.

Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.

Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.

"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a classic phenomenon," he said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."

He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.

He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible.

Of course Moses was under the influence. Otherwise he wouldn’t bring the Jews into this sh!t.

Well, I think the part in the Old Testament when Moses goes out looking for Doritos and some Twinkies was a bit of a give-away, myself.

 Moses parts the Dorito bag.

Did you know that researchers believe the girls who accused the Salem townspeople of witchcraft in the early 1600's where actually affected by a type of hallucinogenic mold spore that is known to have infected wheat crops those years?

I know that has nothing to do with Moses, but I can't bring myself to comment on that.

If I came down from a mountain waving a couple of bits of stone about and jabbering about burning bushes that speak - people would rightly think I was either crazy, or hopped up to the eyeballs.

Fireblasted lumps of stone brought down from a mountain by a raving lunatic does not make a system of laws - just as watery tarts distributing swords is no basis for a system of government ;)

It's a reasonably rational explanation for what took place and not without precedent in terms of religious groups use of mind altering substance.

Whether one then goes on to conclude anything further about the existance of god is arguable.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
