I applied to change status when I was going from visitor to F1 and it took forever and I heard nothing back for months..I ended up going back home and coming back across to get my F1...(its different for Canadians though) but when I first applied I went right to the office in denver and he told me that as long as I had filed papers and was in the process of adjusting I wouldn't get in trouble for over staying.
