But he is not practising psychiatry, not properly - it's a chat show. He is unable to work or run his own practise due to these allegations:

The Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists imposed disciplinary sanctions on McGraw on January 27, 1989 for an inappropriate "dual relationship" reported in 1988 by a therapy client/employee from 1984. McGraw was ordered by the Board to take an ethics class, pass a jurisprudence exam, complete a physical evaluation, undergo a psychological evaluation and have his practice supervised for one year in order to continue his private practice in Texas. McGraw admits to giving the client a "job" at his office (which is not allowed), but denied carrying on a sexual relationship with the 19-year-old, who says their relationship was "sexually inappropriate."[30][3][12] As of 2008, McGraw has not completed the conditions imposed by the Board of Examiners of Psychologists,[31] and he is not licensed to practice psychology in Texas, California, or anywhere else.

Dr Laura Schlessinger (a CA talk radio personality) is like that too. She's not a licensed therapist.

Schlessinger received her certification in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from the University of Southern California (USC) and lectured at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of California, Irvine, and Pepperdine University. It should be noted, however, that as of January 11, 2008, a search of the roster of professionals licensed by the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners to practice Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling, does not show her to be one so licensed.

Haha, that's funny he's not allowed to practice! What is with all these TV doctors who aren't licensed with the appropriate boards??? Anywho, I hate watching Dr. Phil. He always has interesting topics, but when I tune in, all he does is talk and talk and talk, never letting the people on the show speak. When he does, it's usually the ones he agrees with and then talks over the ones he doesn't. He finally asks questions to the guest he doesn't agree with and then immediately goes to commercial. It could be so much better if he would just stop TALKING!!!

Of course he can't practice psychiatry. He never could. He's a psychologist, which means he has a Ph.D., Psy.D. or even an M.S.W. Psychiatrists have an M.D. The easiest way to remember the difference between the two is that psychiatrists are medical doctors and can prescribe medication, whereas psychologists (with the exception of Louisiana and New Mexico) are not legally licensed to do so.
