Unrestricted Social Security Refused

Just for informational purposes, my hubby went up to Boston Immigration office today to get stamp in his passport as was suggested here and also suggested by the Congressman's office.

Well, guess what?! He was denied the stamp by two differenct officers. They both told him he had all the proper paperwork to be able to work and also to get an unrestricted social security card. And then he went over to SS office in Boston and they still denied him the unrestricted card.

So as easy as everything sounds on paper, maybe you can understand my (continued) frustration.

So now he has missed a day at work for nothing - again.

Why did they refuse to give him stamp? Because his 1 year extension is not expiring soon? I know that basically the SSA officer only went by the list of document & the 1 year extension is not on it.

It is a looooong story but the whole thing is basically on the thread about removal of conditions.

He was told to go to Boston and get the stamp and then when he got there they wouldn't give it. But both officers told him that he had everything he needed to get unrestricted SS card. Anyway, no one ever seems to know what the other can or can't do but they sure don't hesitate to tell you to go over there anyway.

We had quite a mission at the SSA Office when we attempted to get me an unrestricted SS Card. The woman we talked to told me the SS Card with the "Not Valid without DHS Authorization.." stamp was unrestricted!

Now that's funny!

You should have asked her if she herself had the same stamp. :P

I wanted to stamp those words into her face because of how she was. It annoys me even now to remember the stupid things she said and how superior and absolutely correct she tried to appear. grrr.. I really hate it when people have no clue what they are talking about and still act like they do.

Question

When I first applied for a Social Security card, I was issued a card that says, "Not Valid for Employment". I now have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Will I be issued a different number, or will I have to apply to adjust my current number?

Answer

If your work eligibility has changed or if you have become a U.S. citizen, you must apply for a replacement card. Your replacement card will no longer read “Not Valid for Employment,” but you will retain the same Social Security number.

To get a replacement card:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and

Show us documents proving your:

Immigration status;

Work eligibility; and

Identity.

Take (or mail) your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office. If you live in the New York City metropolitan area, Las Vegas NV, Orlando FL, Sacramento, CA or Phoenix AZ you may need to apply in person at your local Social Security Card Center.

All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

I just wanted to post this here for informational purposes for those who maybe aren't reading the discussion on removal of conditions.

My husband has been having a problem with a potential employer because his greencard has expired during the process of filing for removal of conditions. We have the NOA1 from USCIS which clearly states he can work and travel for a year from the date of the notice (which is early November of 2007). However they have decided this is not acceptable proof of his employability status.

While going through all of this we realized that he never got a newer social security card than the one he got when he first came to US on his fiance visa. So it is stamped with that statement about only being authorized for employment with DHS documentation. (Yes we feel we have this documentation because of NOA1 and expired greencard but again that is another story)

So someone on here advised that he could go to Social Security and get an unrestricted card. So he headed off there first thing this morning (opting to go late to work because we felt this was important). He presented all his information and they denied it. They said until he gets the new greencard he can't get an unrestricted card.

Anyway, just wanted to put this information out there. I don't know why we never thought to go back to Social Security and get an unrestricted card. But if you don't have an unrestricted card and you do have a valid greencard you should probably go and rectify this.
