I'm new to this site and would like some feedback about the petition experience. I filed the I129f in January and heard back from them within two weeks. Any idea how long till I would hear more? Are there any women here who filed for their future husbands like me? My fiance is Canadian so would like to find out how quickly the embassy there works. Thanks

I'm in the same position as you. Filed for my Canadian fiance. Like someone said, if you start your own thread no one will miss this. Also, come over to the K-1 filing and Progress Reports board and you'll get a lot more info about what you're looking at. You can also look up timelines from the "immigration timelines" link above to find out what other people have waited. Good luck!

See my timeline for my K-1 and AOS/EAD/AP details.

I dont trust the doctors down here...I think they're all in it for a profit.

I havnt made it to the US YET!.... I dont know if i will get homesick for canada exactly, as much as my family. I have been living in different cities then them for 7yrs, and have to go 14+months without seeing them when i am still in the same country.

I havnt had to deal with US health care either, but I have had to deal with Canadian quite a bit, and I think that Canadian docs arnt in it at all.

I wish they wanted profit, at least it would maybe put some motivation into them.

anyways... I can not wait to be homesick

Docs in Canada do get paid more $$$ for seeing more patients and doing surgeries!! My sister was a RN in the cardiology floor in Calgary, and the Dr would be ticked if one of their surgeries was cancelled, that was $$$ out the door, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hi Gladys, can you work as in IT Consulting? Have you looked at smaller Microsoft Partner/Channel companies? They should have some in Cincinnati. Have you also considered working with a Headhunter? They work a bit differently then a staffing agency.

I haven't actually moved to the US yet, but I'm actually looking forward to it. I'll miss my family, but I'm not going that far and I'm moving to NYC from Toronto so going from city to city is decent. I've also been dating my bf for 4.7 years, so I've been there to visit plenty of times and know exactly what I'm in for. I'm also very excited career-wise as I work in PR and already deal with US media a lot. Plus, NYC is the place to be for PR.

All that being said, I'm sure I will struggle. I am prepared to be homesick, frustrated and bored. Although, not working for 3-6 months is heavenly to me. I also think that since we are taking our time with this, it is really helping to ease me in. As much as the waiting sucks and as much as I wish R would just propose already, I'm saving a crapload of money so that I can enjoy my time there, not worry about paying bills and ease in.

I'm most worried about not having friends that are female. Most of R's friends are guys, although most have girlfriends now so that is good for me!

I'm sure I'll look back at this post and see how blinded I really am, but I figure it's better to be an optimist!

Gladys - I also wanted to add, do they have any Tech Industry for Women type associations there? I work in Tech PR and often attend networking sessions with women working in Tech etc. There are usually headhunters there to speak with too. I have only been to these events in Toronto with a group called "Wired Women" - but I bet things like this exist there too.

Its hard when you first move you miss friends and family and the familiar places. If it wasn't for the fact that my DH is my best friend I would feel so alone. You learn to adjust. So don't worry it gets better!

Oh and now that I'm pregnant I'm really wanting some poutine and theres none :(

That's a totally good question, I think.

I do sometimes second guess the decision. I miss my friends and family and a few things about home. Things here are slowly starting to fill the hole left from missing my old life and things that were familiar. I imagine it'll only get even better when we move to my SO's hometown and are close to his friends and family.

I almost have second thoughts when I hear all this talk about the recession too. It's scary and I guess it doesn't make adjusting to life in the US any easier.

I've mentioned in a post earlier that one of the hardest things about moving here is that I'd expected it to be so similar to home but beneath the surface it really isn't the same at all. Embracing the differences makes it easier.

I've learned a lot about how dangerous it can be to have expectations through this whole process. I too thought it would be completely lovely all of the time (for the most part it has been just by virtue of the fact that I'm with my husband). But I started to get pretty disappointed pretty quickly when reality wasn't matching the picture perfect scenario I'd jotted out in my mind. I thought the immigration process would be seamless and straight-forward and it has been anything but. I guess that's just life sometimes.

It gets better all the time and I'm hopeful that it'll only continue to get better and easier... I'm sure the same is true for you. Give it a bit more of a chance. It's an adjustment and it takes a little time.

Going from being really independent to not having a job and having to depend on someone else for a few months can really be difficult. Oh man don't I know it. I came to a new place, needed directions just to get to the store, couldn't drive anywhere because I didn't have a valid ID, needed my husband for EVERYTHING.

I don't think anyone but the people who are going through it can understand. We all go through tons of stuff just to get here. I feel so ungrateful sometimes. I waited for that interview, left everything behind for this man that I love and I got down here and the reality of everything sets in, and its hard. I cry way more than a newly married woman should cry

But hey at least we can all cry together right.

You need husband for everything ,isnt that why you got married for and he needs you too -!!!when we cry we cry alone :P

Its gonna be a year that I am here in 1 month ( wow where did time go)

All in all, I miss my family, my friends, my favorite food from home, etc.

Took me 8 months to get a job, handfull of months to settle in the area and be independent to go to the store and know where to go, etc.

It's not easy at all. I think we all underestimate the transition. I thought it would be easy but I was wrong.

One thing though, every night, when the last thing I see before I close my eyes is my husband, I cherish the life I have here. It's hard, but it could be worst. I could be back in Canada alone. All the rest is just material.

And having a VERY supportive husband is the key. He is there to pick me up when I feel down.

you are one lucky woman as you have a very supportive hubby.

I haven't wrote anything on here in quite awhile, but I always stop in and read what's happening and when I saw this thread it sure hit home..

I've been in Indiana for 4 years next month now and the ONLY thing keeping me here is my husband. I would pack up

and head back to Ontario in a second and never give this place another thought if it weren't for him. I am by no means saying this is everyone's experience or how they feel, this is just my own. I can honestly say if I had the chance to do it over again... I wouldn't....If i could have known I'd still feel like this 4 years later I would never have made that move.

I can't say I know one thing in general that I dislike about it, for me, it's the whole package..I've really been hoping my attitude would change toward it, but it hasn't... I am, however, hopeful that someday it will....

Regards,

Anne
