hello everyone!

I have a question for you.

I have my CR1 interview on April 24 and my canadian passport expired in Nov 26, 2008. now...i know that our passport needs to be at least 6 months valid after the entery to USA after the visa. If all goes well in interview...i m planning to fo to USA in end of may or first week of June. My question is ..do i need to renew my passport or no?

The puzzling thing is..i called NVC today about this issue and the answer i got was "I cannot give you an answer to that you need to contact the passport renewal office for that"...now isn't that weird? it is actually their requirement that it should be 6 month valid after the first entery not the canadian passport pffice..?????!!!!!!! THIS PEOPLE ARE JUST THERE TO CONFUSE US AREN'T THEY?

I need you advices on this one my dear VJers!!!

Please help,

pari

(thank you to all who replies in advance)

It is suppose to be valid for 6 months!! And u would be cutting it extremely close!! There was a VJ member that just recently wen to the interview and their Cdn passport had less than 6 months on it and they got the visa! Is that always the case?? who knows!! If you can, I would get a new Cdn passport, thus you do not have to worry about it!! I do believe they have picked up the pace on issuing cdn passports!! I'm sure it must state the waiting times on the Cdn Passport webpage!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

As its such a pain to renew your passport from the US, you might as well just renew it while you're still home. If you go to the Passport office for it you can get it back within 10 days.

I renewed mine before I went for my visa, it still had not quite a year on it, but I didn't want it to expire half way thru my visa. I just included a letter with the new application stating why I needed it early and they didn't have a problem with it at all. I went and picked it up 10 days later.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Please keep us posted. My husband wants one, but thinks that being in process for the IR-1, and having little 'proof' that he will return to Canada if he enters the U.S. will be problematic for obtaining a nexus pass.
