Hi there,

My name is Emma Sheridan and I am doing some research for a major broadcaster in the UK at the moment. I stumbled across this site and I'm hoping there might be some members on here that can help me shed some light on this project!! Let me explain a bit about the documentary...

At the moment I am working on the development of a programme looking at women increasingly assuming roles more traditionally associated with men, and in this specific case looking at women seeking foreign men for marriage.

We are hoping to produce a documentary that looks at women turning the traditional roles of seeking foreign partners on their heads, and getting online or otherwise to find their future husbands outside of the their home country. On the internet Russia and the Ukraine have almost become synonymous with marital introduction agency websites and it seems that brides from every corner of the globe are seeking western men on the internet. But what we have been interested in finding are western women seeking foreign husbands. According to various blogs and international dating sites there seem to be a growing number of marriage-hungry women becoming disillusioned with the western dating game and looking for happiness further away from home, however there don't seem to be any specific sites offering western women the chance to search for and meet a foreign husband.

We are extremely keen to discover whether any existing couples are out there, where the women have actively sought a foreign (Russian/Ukrainian) husband and asked him to relocate to their home.

I wondered whether anyone out there is aware of any such couples who are co-habiting/married/divorced. I would love to talk to anyone(confidentially of course) willing to help!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Emma

I'm surprised you haven't had any replies yet. I guess women marrying men from Former Soviet Regions is not so popular. Perhaps western women are discouraged. i mean, maybe they see how many women from those regions want to have a western man and figure there must be a reason why they "stray". Just a thought. I don't know.

I doubt that's the logic; if there is a stereotype, at least, I've never run across it. Anyone really think the reason that developing world women are willing to marry American men is that there's something wrong with their own men?

I suspect, though, that there is the idea, however deprecated, of husband material also being breadwinner material and wife material not needing to be breadwinner material. Even in a comparatively liberated society, the idea that the guy should make more money and it's okay if the woman isn't prepared to is still dominant. Even if the couple themselves are relatively egalitarian, most women aren't looking for the equivalent of a stay-at-home wife. (This is why I don't find the 'American women are all career oriented' all that persuasive. 96% of the time, if someone stays at home, it's the woman.)

The poor guy without a lot of financial security to offer putting himself up on a website is basically at a disadvantage from the cultural perspective of what's acceptable dating material. No market in making a website to market to a really tiny percentage of well-off women. (And, of course, guys with tons of money or prospects looking to marry women have other outlets besides marriage-broker type sites.) A foreign girl who isn't educated or financially secure; charitably, it's just not a dating disadvantage for her.

It's not to say that American women don't date foreign men. They just meet in other ways.
