So my credit card application was denied. Good thing Hubby hadded me to one of his now at least.

Their reasons for it were:

lengh of time accounts have been established too short

Insufficient credit-no credit bureau file found

Insufficient credit history

Oh well, I expected it. At least it's less temptation ;)

I just had a joint credit card with my husband which is offered by HSBC. I didn't get my SSN yet, so even the bank staff was surprised that their computer system approved me...However, the credit limit is very low, just $500 cause they said I have no enough financial background history in US yet.

Well, it still a good start for me...heehee I can do some online shopping now. :P

Try WAMU and their Secured Credit card. I'm building my credit history with them.

You just put down $300 or more and they give you one with a credit line of $300. If you make your payments on time and show that you are responsible after 6 month they give you the real deal and they give you back your money.

I just got a balance transfer to WaMu and I love them so far. I can see my credit score/history right on their site, it's fabulous.

Just because my home country has HSBC too, and I thought it will benefit me for remitting money in future..

Hmmm I am wrong, it's so complicated and now I gave up.

Haha, when we were in South America, we saw HSBC stuff EVERYWHERE. My husband (immigrant) is like, I CANNOT GET AWAY!

No, we just made a payment twice and everytime they told us we'd messed up the account number, even those both times it was verified 4 times and it was not wrong. Then they had the gall to harass me about my late payment. Well, ####! I told them they'd get their money when they got their act together.

And suddenly I understood why my mom groaned when I told her BofA sold it to HSBC...:D

Just a little update.....

My husband and I applied for a credit card with RBC oh about 3 weeks ago now. Turned out my husband used to have a line of credit with them before he moved. So that should help get an ok......or so you would think. It's been 3 weeks like I said and no word from them. I called the loan officer at the bank (it's a small bank and they all know us very well). She said she would call be back later that day....that was over 1 week ago. I'm calling them back tomorrow and if I can't get an answer I guess it's on to Capital One or who ever.

It took me about 15 mins to get the approval of my first and the only one credit card here (thru HSBC), maybe I show them I got their account in my home country too.

But they denied to grant me a credit limit increase due to INSUFFICIENT LENGTH OF ACCOUNT HISTORY afterwards, I requested this because $500 is really too low!! :( Well, so I just use mine for grocery or buy little gift for myself. Can't buy something to husband, cause he can check the account online...

I started adding my husband to my credit card accounts and then he applied at 4 different places on his own. Citibank, Chase and Bank of America all denied him because of not having an account history in the US. Then he applied at Capital One and got a credit card that is designed to help build and/or improve credit. He was approved in less than 5 minutes and received his card in the mail 5 days later.

Hello Diana! Just curious if your hubby applied for Capital One before or after he got his job. I am planning to apply as well but I have been here in the US for almost 5 months now and still waiting for my EAD. So, I am not currently working. Do you think they will approve me even if I don't have a job yet and my hubby didn't have any credit cards of his own since he always used debit cards and he also has a very limited credit history as well. However, we are planning to open a secured credit card with our bank this week but getting an unsecured credit card without first getting a secured card will be great!
