I'm not so sure what's so irresponsible about reporting it - its a darn big secret to keep anyway.

Its hardly a precedent either - Prince Philip and Prince Andrew both served in armed conflicts (WW2 and Falklands respectively) without trying to bury the fact of their involvement.

i remember when this came out in the news about him wanting to go, stuck in my mind cos my cousin is in the army and he has served in both iraq, and afganistan. i didnt think he would be allowed to go cos of the risks and implications, but to be honist i hadnt noticed he was gone and im suprised he had this long before the media found out at blabbed. but i do aggree with the silence over his post. only for the sake of those serving there with him.

He'd be a very high-profile target. Don't you think leaving him in Helmand province after his presence there was splashed all over Drudge would endanger the people he was serving with? I'm not sure this is necessarily a benefit of privilege - it sounds prudent to me.

If he was really milking his privilege, he wouldn't have been there to begin with.

You misunderstand me - I don't think he's milking his privilege, but clearly if you're deemed a high-profile celebrity its enough of a reason to get you pulled from the front lines, regardless of your own wishes.

It's the silly tip-toeing around him that I find ridiculous - the government and the army higher-ups first decided he shouldn't serve in active combat, then that he could - but only if the worldwide media kept a massive secret. Now its out of the bag, he's pulled out of there immediately. Its like they only wanted him to play at war, but only at a safe distance.

Seems a little insulting not only to him but to the folks serving with him as well. The princes join the armed forces to set an example, but that example can only be one of appearance - they're not allowed to actually get their hands dirty.
