We are awaiting AOS and my husband has his EAD and is working. I read in another post that people who have green cards are supposed to carry them on their person at all times  but does my husband need to carry anything with him now?

And as for our 10 year old... uh, I love him to pieces, but I am NOT having him carry anything important for at least another 8 years. I think/hope this is OK with the US govt! He can't even keep track of his jacket.

Thanks!

Maya

I only ever carried my passport as I.D. before I received the Green Card, now I carry both.

I wouldn't ask a kid to carry anything either... I carried my passport in my purse, then I put my EAD in my purse when it arrived and put the passport away... then the EAD was superceded by the actual greencard, and now I've replaced THAT with my state ID on the grounds that if I wasn't legal I wouldn't have been able to get it (and also it's much much cheaper and easier to replace than the precious greencard...)

My wife carried nothing except her visa card  and occasionally her wallet with her old Colombian IDs. Now that she has the Green card maybe she will carry it - I don't remember ever being asked for my ID when I had a Geeen card (and also seldom carried it.) And as a citizen, I don't carry anything other than my driver's license - I think we stress too much when really the only time you may need an ID is traveling otherwise all you need is your visa card - at Starbucks! Good Luck

I carry my GC, state ID, UK drivers licence and a copy of my marriage certificate with me everywhere

I didn't carry anything other than my state ID whilst I was adjusting, however.

When I went to Colombia I carried a copy of my passport. It was too important to lose and I actually had to show the copy a couple of times.

Lucero now carries copies of passport, NOA and her EAD. She works with a lot of immigrants so she wants to be able to prove she is legal if ICE ever came in and asked questions. Copies are cheap. Leave original documents at home except for a drivers liscense.

Make sure that the 10 year old knows you telephone number. I can't imagine a 10 year old being deported for improper ID. All kids should know how to get in touch with their folks, for many reasons including ICE.

it says right on the green card that it must be carried with you at all times. For the 10 yr old, you may be able to just photocopy it and he can carry that.

I never carry my passport with me unless I'm travelling, I dont want to lose it.

Thanks for all the responses. My husband carries his state-issued driving learner's permit (he's doing well,too... we're down to about one cardiac event per excursion!). I think maybe it would be a good idea for him to carry a copy of the NOA for his AOS in his wallet, just in case.

Yes, very good suggestion about our 10 year old knowing our phone number. He does. Guess how he learned it? When we go grocery shopping, he always wants to be the "driver" (of the grocery cart) and he always wants to do the automated self-checkout. The self-checkout uses your phone number as ID, so he memorized it by checking out our groceries. And only last night, he found his way through the alphabetical produce look-up thingie all the way to "cerrano chili pepper" all by himself (english is NOT his first language). The kid's brilliant! :D

Thanks again for your responses and good luck to everybody ....

Sounds like you have a child prodigy on your hands. Congratulations! You will enjoy watching this intelligence mature.

I can relate to the driving thing. I am teaching 3 people to drive with a 13 year old and a 12 year old waiting for their turn so I will be a driving instructor for the next 4 years. I have taken to heavy drinking before the lessons. I don't know if there is some sort of penalty for this in Florida but surely the police will understand when I tell them the circumstances.

At our interview in Spokane last week, the officer repeated very strongly several times about carrying the green card with us at all times. She said we probably would not be deported, but we could be charged the deportation fee. Yes, I'm wondering too, how that will work with the kids. Duct tape? :) It didn't sound as though a copy would do, either, as she said that we should not carry the SS card, just a copy, but the green card, yes. I would think that the huge magnetic strip on the back has something to do with that?

By the way, at the top of the magnetic strip, what looks like tiny dots, are actually pictures of all the presidents, and at the bottom, flags of all the states, I think. My son noticed that, I needed a magnifying glass.

I carry around my EAD everywhere, because it's partly my only American photo ID and because job opportunities show up at any time... XD I also carry my Canadian driver's license and need to get that state ID card finally. My passport goes no where near my purse, nor my marriage certificate (too big!).

My green card is unlikely to be carried unless I'm traveling anywhere near a border.
