The NYT is just doing it's old smear tactics again. They failed with the affair with the lobbiest so now they are trying this. Not much media bias here right?

It's yellow journalism. Curiously though, William Kristol took a position for the paper. Money talks louder than principal?

LOL, even their top columnists don't make that much. Less than 3 for sure.

Yellow journalism has been around since William Randolph Hearst. Sensationalism sells papers and that's why they do it...generally speaking, of course.

Ok, I read it. It's not even being treated as a major story, and it seems pretty unbiased and in McCain's favor. Chill, ok?

Steven, thank you, I'm aware of the history of yellow journalism, and this certainly isn't it. Nothing sensationalist about this story.

Ah, I just read the link Gary posted. I agree. There's nothing sensational about it - no exaggeration of facts. My bad. In the effort to be fair to Gary's argument, I was trying to say that yellow journalism exists, even among large, hi-profile newspapers such as the NYT.

I don't see any pointed innuendo in the article that would make it "sensationalist" - the tone of it is pretty neutral.

Though it wouldn't be an unfair question to wonder what is the context for bringing up this story. They say that McCain's candidacy has "revived a debate that surfaces periodically" - but they don't say who is reviving it this time, or where it is coming from.

Does McCain have a non-USC parent?

So, re: Jenn's post, does that mean the NYT just doesn't know the rules? And that's why they haven't written the story yet?

Like I mentioned on the other thread, it's possible the rules have changed, and the laws that would have made McCain a natural-born citizen today might not have been in effect in 1936.

How on earth it is media bias to write about someone not being eligible for high office I don't know... would you rather find out later and have the guy impeached, should he win?

There doesn't have to be bias present for there to be accusations of bias. Most of the time "Media bias" is a kneejerk catchphrase - though you tend to find that bias accusations are usually directed at particular institutions or publications, rather than the content of specific stories.

Chances are if a person calls out a story as biased, they can't explain why its biased - the association with the NYT, CNN, Fox News etc is apparently enough for it to be so

The other thing is that the media *loves* McCain.

I am personally just loving the irony. Weeks and weeks of crazed people thinking Obama is the un-American Muslim antichrist (oh, and he's black, too), and the one whose eligibility is in doubt is the old white guy.

I expect McCain is eligible, and I hope he is, but this is just too funny.

media bias? DID you see what they did to ron paul after he bit+ slapped everyone in all the debates? they hardly ever showed him, the crooked darn media, especially faux news. the reality is that NOW he doesnt matter,he has no chance because the mainstream media blacked him out.

they even changed votong results and altered polls.

now candidates are adopting his platform at their convenience.- (get rid of the irs, federal reserve, etc.) when he did have a chance-they screwed him, guess what? he told the world about the NAFTA superhighway months ago,and they called him a kook and crazy.

that stupid nazi on fox news laughed at him. now who has egg on their face adolph?

i get really ticked when i hear about media darlings like mccain, obama and hillary getting all the press and then they say"they arent treating him/her fair!" you must be joking.

who ever said the media in this country was unbiased and fair was smoking the same dope as bill during the viet nam war,and using the rolling papers from the billions their advertisers pay to elect THEIR candidate.

who in the hell are we to tell other countried they have unfair elections? why is it our business?

and its correct that if you are born on a ship in a foriegn country, even a us territory, you are not covered under the i think )11th amendment,no matter who your parents are. US soil is US soil, and a territory doesnt cut it. check the year he was born.

and i have alot of respect for senator mccain,i dont really care who he banged or didnt, its not our business.

but it also doesnt matter to me if our next president was born in kabul, i just hope and pray he or she does a good job and completely reforms this stupid government money grab at the expense of our personal lives.

when you finish with your visa journey, make sure you make some noise,if we all do it,they will hear loud and clear. peace.

maybe obama will, he mentioned it in the debate the other that. thats a start.

The way that Ron Paul has been treated has completely disgusted me and made me lose all hope of fairness in American politics.

Anderson Cooper cutting him off mid-sentence.

Faux News editing him out of their debate re-airs.

It was funny when Ron Paul was on stage while Romney and McCain bickered over who the real conservative is. Anyone who knows what a conservative really is knew that Ron Paul was the only conservative on the stage.
