That reminds me of a time I was getting a manicure in Queens and this old Irish lady was going off on the Chinese ladies who owned the place about how they have to learn English, as they've been in NY for at least seven years or something... I just made apologetic faces at the Chinese ladies because the Irish lady was giving me some good contacts with the police department there, and I needed to talk to them for a story I was doing. I guess that's life...

I'm pretty sure I'd say something. Well at least if it were here. In Texas I'd probably be afraid that the guy would pull out a gun.

not everyone in texas has a gun jenn. but thanks for the stereotype anyways.

YOU are offended by that stereotype? Lawl.

On the subject, I read recently somewhere something like "one gun might be for security reasons. two, maybe for the especially frightened. three or more constitutes an obsession, a compensation or a great insecurity of another type."

You're...a Texan... gun owner. I mean, c'mon. I'm not offended by the stereotype that Jewish women have big tits because... I do.

Of course I don't believe all Texans have guns. Obvs, all Jewish women don't have big tits. Just saying that's not the one stereotype I'd choose to rail against yknow.....

And don't hold your breath for pictures of my tits. Sorry... :P

Unfortunately, I can't help you, as I come from academic and medical Jews. I could try to refer you to some distant cousin banking Jews I'm sure I could dig up, however.

I would say something for sure.. not sure but I can give an example.. I was just telling my husband about this incedent:

I was in a store and the clerk was arabic.. the lady in front of me asked for something, he said Im sorry we dont carry _______ (cant remember) She said "WHY DONT YA'LL LEARN ENGLISH!"

I said, excuse me.. I understood perfectly what he said, maybe you dont understand english because you are a hick with bad grammer" She groaned and left.... the clerk and I laughed.

It is VERY hard for me to keep me mouth shut in these instances. Maybe thats not the safest, smartest route.. but oh well.

That sounds just like something I would do.I work at a college and some of my co-workers are these little 80 year old men who can be quite bigoted at times. They don't even try to hide it.When they make silly comments like "Hey look, that person might be a terrorist." I make sure I tell them off right away.

March 27,2009-Manuel returned to the consulate for another interrogation(because they forgot about December's interview),and they were really rude !
April 3,2009-US Counsalate asks for more court documents that no longer exist !
June 1,2009-Manuel and I go back to the US consalate AGAIN to give them a letter from the court in Colon along with documents I already gave them last year.I was surprised to see they had two thick files for his case !

June 15,2010-They called Manuel in to take his fingerprints again, still no decision on his case!
June 22,2010-WAIVER APPROVED at 5:00pm

I make sure I tell them off right away.

Senior citizens acting bigoted is a little different, in my opinion, than those of other age groups. The reason I say this is because they grew up in a time period when the rules, manners, customs and ideas were different. It wasn't "bad" to call an African American a certain racial slur that begins with "N" and the entire concept of being politically correct wasn't even in the lexicon.

I'm not going to go ahead and say that this behavior is necessarily "okay," but you have to take older folks for who and what they are. Some may have adapted to the way life is today and others haven't and we just need to deal with it. An 80 year-old man or woman who has strong antagonistic feelings towards any group will simply not change because someone less than half their age attempts to bite their head off.

The best approach, for people this old, is to just ignore them. A different tactic should be used with those much younger (since it's far more likely their mindset can be changed and that they can have a greater effect on society at that point), but with someone getting near the end of their lifespan, it's just not worth it to put up the fuss.
