Gary, you seem to have trouble with the difference between journalistic bias and journalistic integrity. A journalist, whether it was the late William F. Buckley himself or David Brooks, cannot remove themselves from their own views of things when they write. They can, however, make a convincing argument based on fact and reason. That's really all you can hope for. Otherwise, you'll be going through the rest of your life dismissing any piece of journalism that doesn't fit your ideological fancy.

Most of that was due to his upbringing in the South, and the sorts of views that were popular in the South during the 1930's. [/b[] Like several writers I quite like - he's not untypical of people from that place in time - simply a compendium of the popular views that he grew up with.

I think you're being too forgiving of that view -- everyone is a product of their place and time. Plenty of people around him thought differently.

I think you're being too forgiving of that view -- everyone is a product of their place and time. Plenty of people around him thought differently.

As I say - I'd have more of a problem with it if the man hadn't come to change a lot of those prejudiced views.

I watched a tribute to the late William F. Buckley last night on Charlie Rose. I'm not defending his views on many things, but I still contend that he was a thoughtful man, however flawed his thinking might sometimes have been.

Back when I first saw him on Firing Line, I thought he was British because of his 'accent', but he was born and raised here.
