sorry, I know it's been asked before and I tried looking up and going thru previous threads for what I was looking for but couldn't find it.

my question is when we elope next week I want to change my name to his

I know I put my married name on the I-130 we are sending off

in the mean time do I have to change my passport to reflect my married name?

I will be changing my canadian drivers license when I get back home

Did anyone find it easier to keep your last name? Travis seems to think it would be "cool" if I kept my own last name

since there is already a Kim in his family

Just looking for some input from previous experiences

Thanks in advance :)

Can't answer about the I-130 part, but I do believe (anyone correct if I'm wrong here) if you plan to do a name change with Service Canada, it will be the whole 9 yards. You will get a new BC (seems dumb if you ask me) as well as any other government identification (health card etc...) - I assume this includes the passport?

I changed my name here, but am not changing it in Canada...yet anyway, until this entire process is done with. The one disadvantage I see to being halfway in-between is that I need to always have my marriage certificate with us to confirm both my last names. For travelling etc....

You could hyphenate your names or otherwise combine them. I took my husband's name, although I had always said I wouldn't or I would hyphenate...now I somewhat wish it was hyphenated, because i miss my old last name and as it turns out my combo of first and last names is very common when I sign up for stuff, I NEVER had a match before because my last name was unusual.

I'll change my passport name when it comes up for renewal. In the meantime, I just book all my travel in my former name.

I didn't change my name on my Canadian driver's license or my bank account. (Though my bank does have a copy of my marriage certificate because I've deposited cheques into it with my new married name.) Now that I think about it, everything in Canada is still in my old name, while everything in the US is in my married name. I guess that means I have a backup plan.:lol:

If I keep everything in Canada in my old name it won't cause any probs with the immigration process?

I just wasn't sure when it was time for my interview in Montreal what they woudl say if my passport was in my maiden name

I think it would be kinda cool to have 2 names for 2 different countries, hehe

but I would like my name in the US to be his

did they make it so you have to do a legal name change in canada cause when i changed all my id like bank/health card/drivers license all i had to show was my certificate and it helped to have a bill also in my new name but that was awhile ago, and when i went to change my sin card the women at the office told me i didnt really have to so i never did i wasn't going to pay to get a new card the others didnt cost me well the dirvers license did but i did it only when it was time to renew it lol.
