Hi All

Just thought i'd give people waiting for their ssn a heads up that it might take longer than the 4 weeks they say it may take if you go through manual verification.

I applied for my ssn a little over 4 weeks after i arrived in the usa hoping i would be in the save system, and i got a letter the same day i applied from the clerk at the ss office saying it could take upto 4 weeks for it to arrive because i wasn't in the save system, so i waited and waited and after 4 weeks heard nothing from them, i called every week after that and they kept telling me there was nothing on their records to show that i had been approved a ssn number.

Finally yesterday after 9 weeks and 2 days i recieved my ssn in the mail.

The problem i have now is that it is in my maiden name and i have to change it to my married name, i dont fancy waiting another however many weeks to get it back in my married name, so any advice on how to go about changing names without waiting weeks for a new card would be greatly appreciated.

Also do i have to hand over the ssn card i recieved yesterday when i go to apply to have my name changed, if i do can i make a record of the number and use it when, if, i need to while i wait for my new card

Thanks for any advice you may be able to give me

My wife didn't wait too long to get her updated card, perhaps a week or so. I don't recall if they took the maiden name card from her when she applied for the change. One thing for sure, though, the replacement card will have the same number. Your idea of keeping a copy is a smart move. Why not keep a copy of the application form as well. Also, I believe that you'll get a receipt from your local SSA office. If you do need to prove that you have a card before your new one arrives, at least an employer will see that you are in the system.

I had a similar question recently to you check out the LINK.

I dont fancy waiting another however many weeks to get it back in my married name, so any advice on how to go about changing names without waiting weeks for a new card would be greatly appreciated.

You will have to wait for a new card to be sent out, no two ways about that. Possibly because it's only a name change it shouldn't take as long as your first card as you are in the system. Ensure that you change your name prior to the two weeks before your I-94 expires!

Also do i have to hand over the ssn card i recieved yesterday when i go to apply to have my name changed, if i do can i make a record of the number and use it when, if, i need to while i wait for my new card

Do not give your original card back, say you don't have it on you! Your SSN number will be the same as your first card so you will still be able to use it.

I personally would do it sooner rather than later (because I did it later and there was a bit of a rush to get things done!)

Good Luck

Nicola

It only took about two weeks to get my new card when I changed to my new married name. I am the USC but I don't think that is really an issue. My husband applied for his SS card 3 days after he arrived here and got it in two weeks. I have heard it is faster if you were given the EAD at POE. Not sure, but it worked fast for him.

Good Luck!

I am the USC and when I changed my name near the end of last year this is how it was handled. First I had to go to the office with a copy of my marriage papers and I had already updated my drivers license. They looked over the documents and double checked the form I had downloaded from the web for the name change. The lady did take my ss card but she printed out a notice that they were issuing me a new card and that my ss card number was xxx-xx-xxxx. This letter was if anyone needed to see my card. She told me it would take 3 - 4 weeks for the new card to arrive. I had my card come in the mail three weeks later. Good luck.

First have you been here 76 days or more and does your marriage certificate have either your age or date of birth? They are supposed to hold onto the G-845 for 2 months after a card is issued, so hopefully they will still have that.

DO NOT DO NOT give them your old card until you get the new one!!! Tell them your dog ate it. LOL

RM 00201.080 Field Office (FO) Disposal of Returned Social Security Number (SSN) Cards

2. Card Returned With Request For Replacement Card or New SSN

If the applicant has a card and requests a replacement card (duplicate or corrected) or a new SSN:

-- Ask the applicant to return the old SSN card. (If the applicant does not have the card with him or her, remind the applicant to return the old card to SSA for destruction or to keep the old card in a secure place [not in a wallet or purse]).

NOTE: Do not forcefully confiscate the SSN card if the applicant refuses to relinquish it. Similarly, return the old SSN card if the applicant requests that it be given back.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210 RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Data

The applicant may submit either:

One legal name change document showing both the old and new names (e.g., a court order for a name change or a marriage document. The document must also show either (1) a description or photograph of the person or (2) biographical information that can be compared with the Numident data; or

When the name change document does not show either a photograph of the person or biographical information that can be compared with the Numident data, then, in addition to the name change document, the applicant must also submit two identity documents listed in RM 00203.200E. One of the submitted identity documents must show the old name (the name on the latest Numident record) AND the other submitted identity document must show the new name (the name to be shown on the corrected SSN card). The identity documents submitted must show either a photograph of the applicant or provide biographical information that can be compared with the Numident data.

a. Bride Takes Groom’s Last Name

In all 50 U.S. States (this means the 50 States, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa) the bride may take her husband's last name (surname or family name) as her new last name. (EXAMPLE: Jane Doe married John Jones and she may change her name to Jane Jones.)

Interim Guidance: If the bride wants to take her husband's last name, accept the marriage document as a legal name change for the bride if the new name can be derived from the marriage document; even if the marriage document only shows each partner's first names, the bride's prior surname and husband's surname. The marriage document alone can be accepted as evidence of identity for both the old and new names when it meets the criteria described in RM 00203.200G.2.

2. Determine if the ID Document Has Required Information

Ask the applicant to submit one or more documents that show the person's name AND provide:

Biographical information in addition to the person's name that the reviewer can compare with the data on the SS-5 (e.g., date of birth, age, or parents' names) and/or Physical information that the reviewer can compare with the applicant (e.g., physical description, photograph).

NOTE: A non-picture identity document must have the person's name as well as information that can be compared to the Numident, the applicant or other documents submitted (e.g., age, date of birth, or parents' names).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name

When issuing immigration documents, the Department of State and DHS issue them in the person's legal name. The legal name is also generally the name in which the foreign passport was issued.

When an alien applies for an SSN card, presume the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change (e.g., marriage) that occurred after the immigration document was issued.

In cases where an alien applies for a replacement SSN card and submits an immigration document showing a name that is different from the name on the prior Numident record, accept the immigration document as evidence of the legal name. In these cases, the prior SSN card may have been issued in a name that was not the NH’s legal name.

Note: Also need proof of work authorized alien status.

MDYoung to the rescue! :)

If the delay is getting a bit too much, go back down to the office and make sure they've actually sent off the application. My office opted not to do that with me... >:(

As for a replacement, it should be pretty straightforward as laidout above.

Plan #2 LOL

If your marriage certificate has either your age or date of birth you should be about to correct the name on your SSN record, but you will not be issued a card until you have an EAD card or I-551 card or stamp. Then you just need to apply for a replacement card, since your SSN record has already been corrected.

RM 00203.510 Alien without Work Authorization - Nonwork Need for an SSN

4. Correcting Numident Data When a Replacement Card Cannot Be Issued

If the alien does not provide evidence of work authorization or a valid nonwork reason, explain that no replacement card can be issued.

Although a replacement card cannot be issued, the Numident can be corrected if the alien has provided documentation supporting the change (e.g., a name change).

If the alien provides documentation supporting the change, process the SS-5 to update the Numident information but suppress the issuance of a card.
