How long is it possible to wait on filing joint taxes after being married? My husband and I are reviewing everything for taxes and we were wondering how long is it possible for us to wait on filing taxes. Our concern arises because we don't know if I am a claimed as a dependent on my parents taxes. If I am will this be a problem if he claims me on his taxes?

What should we do about taxes we have already had our interview(AOS interview no card) and they didn't ask for a joint tax return but we want to make the most of our marriage monetarily however, we are both college students so we are not 100% sure of the process. I also have yet to recieve my new social security card with his last name (not that the number will change). Should he claim me or shouldn't he? where can we find more information on this.

If you were married as of 31 Dec 2007, you must as married filing jointly or married filing separately IF your joint income was above the minimum filing requirement.

A spouse is NEVER a dependent on his/her own return as you are the person filing, and you will receive a personal exemption as a person filing.

You cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone elses return if you are filing. You can only be counted once.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

Yes even though you are filing you can still be claimed as a dependent on your parents tax return. If they provided support for more than 6 months. If that is the case then you have to claim zero on yours if you are filing "Married filiing seperately" or 1 (includes husband) if you are filing "Married filling jointly"

My wife came to the US on an F1 visa about 10 years ago.
