My husband (a UKC) is applying as soon as he possibly can (20 May 2010, but who's counting?). He considers himself an American (or at least one in training) already, and having the citizenship will seal this. I had to talk him out of formally renouncing his British citizenship; although he professes no desire to ever live in the UK or even Europe again, I stressed to him the benefits of having a non-US passport for some travel and work purposes.

Richard has no interest in returning to the UK either, not even to visit. I would love to see where he "came from" and I suspect eventually we will make the journey there, but it won't be anytime soon.

Wow, not even to visit? That is kind of sad :( Does he not have family there? I've been to see Tom's homeland (Scotland) 4x now and I love it (London was amazing too!).

Beibehaltung der deutschen Staatsangehörigkeit

I thought this was interesting:

Bitte beachten Sie unbedingt folgendes:

Is that true of the US that if you are granted citizenship, you are then considered a citizen from the time of the initial application?

My point is that it's good to apply for the citizenship when you are eligible (yes it is a lot of money), but like last summer, you never know when USCIS decides to bring the citizenship fees brought up to three zeros number

and yes, this stops the process to deal with USCIS once in for all, unless you loose your naturalization letter

we will save money in the next few months and will apply for N-400 in Dec this year.....

Cheers

I'm just a little bit curious. If and when we all manage to get our conditions removed. How many plan to take the next step to become U.S. citizens and how many will just remain permanent residents?

Personally, if things keep going this way hell will have to freeze over before I even consider giving up my Danish passport.

Personally since my home country allows and legislates for Dual citizenship (The UK even has a funny little law that says if you renounce your UK citizenship, but do it only to gain another citizenship, it doesnt count and you are still considered a UK citizen) - I plan on obtaining US citizenship as soon as I can (I qualify to apply January 2009, so from that point its just a matter of being able to afford it)

Why?

One simple reason: So that I NEVER have to deal with USCIS EVER again lol

To put an end to the fees, address changes and all the other fuss...

There's a saying, that when in financial difficulties the first thing to do is stop the bleading to minimise your loss... and that's more or less how i see the citizenship process... a means to stop having to pay the immigrant tax of GC renewals etc etc.... and all the waiting around on their slow and inefficient service...

Just think about it - how many people actually qualify for citizenship BEFORE they finish having conditions removed from their greencard? A good number.

I do hope my removal of conditions goes quickly, but at the same time there's a part of me that would appreciate the humour of getting citizenship before they get done processing my I751.
