Hello all,

So I now have my Green Card, my SSN and am getting ready to apply for my TX DL. :dance:

I am also very scared! I technically have until June until my year of UK licence driving is over, but I need to get this done now as I'm pregnant and don't fancy taking the test with a huge bump in my way!

Please can someone advice me on what the TX test is like? I am petrified that after 10 months of driving here, and 5 years of driving in the UK I am going to be failed. LOL.

Hubby assures me that they will only want me to do a written test. Is this true? Is there anything I need to learn before hand? I have looked at the website for the DVLA in TX, and can't find anything like what there is in the UK - that huge handbook which I remember trying to speed read on the bus when I was 17. (fond memories!)

Will I have to take some kind of practical test - with (God forbid!) things like Parallel parking? I'm an expert on parallel parking in a Vauxhall Nova in the middle of croydon, but the thought of doing it in the huge ### car we have now out here makes my blood run cold.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

03/17/06 . . . 70 Day Letter

04/06/06 . . . Appointment for EAD - Not allowed because we're approved!

04/16/06. . . .ALL APPROVED!!! WELCOME TO USA LETTER RECEIVED!

04/19/06 . . . GREEN CARD IN HAND! NO MORE USCIS UNTIL 2008!!!

greetings!

It may help to get the free brochure from the DMV office for you to review for the written and road test... its very simple...once ready then take all documents necessary and take the written test..they will review score right away and if you pass they will issue a T.I.P. allowing you to practice driving for 30 days then once ready you will then take the road test.....if pass then bring the road certificate back to DMV for licence and photo.

Check with your local DMV office or even goggle it. My husband just received his driver's license Saturday. We were told an international license in Ohio is only good for 30 days once you take up permanent residence. He took the written part and received his learner's in January and took the road test and manuverability part on April 22. He passed and this week he has been driving off to work and back in his car and is he a happy man. I hope you pass but I'm sure you will if you have been driving that long. Just read up on the DMV book and call to see if there is any road test or other testing.

I agree with what the others said about googling your DMV. I know some states and even insurance companies do not recognize the international licenses after one or two months in the USA. Good luck.

Just read the TX DMV handbook... the written test is very easy. If they give you the road test I guess it's gonna easy for you since you already have a driving experienced!

Check out the driver's manual at your DMV. Some states are even pretty progressive and have the information online, even with a practice test! Unfortunately Illinois, my state, doesn't but you can probably check out the state Department of Motor Vehicles to find out.

Don't sweat the small stuff too much; you'll probably do fine. I have to unfortunately do the whole test thing all over too, not looking forward to it!

1) How long can I drive with an out-of-country driver license?

Generally, a person 18 to 75 years of age with a valid out-of-country driver license in their possession may drive a private, non-commercial motor vehicle in the State of Texas for up to one year from date of entry into the United States, if their home country has reciprocity with the U.S. In order to check for reciprocity agreement status, click on Reciprocity In Driver Licensing

New residents from out-of-country:

Proof of Identity.

Proof of Social Security Number. (If you do not have a Social Security Number, you will need to complete a Social Security Affidavit (DL-13) form.)

Proof of Texas vehicle registration and liability insurance, if you own a vehicle. T

Complete required forms available at any Texas Driver License office.

Pay the required fee.

Pass the written, driving* and vision examinations.

Application must include photograph and thumbprints; however, thumbprints are not included on the driver license.
