hi!

I am new to the boards - he just popped the question Sat night :)

I have been going thru the posts and was unclear about SSN's

we are eloping next week before I have to head back to canada (I have been here 2 months)

we are going the IR-1/CR1 route

after we get married can I apply for a SSN right away or do I have to wait till I am approved (the I-130)?

Date of I-751 = 03/05/2011

NOA Date = 3/08/2011

Biometrics = 04/11/2011

Approved = 09/08/2011

you can't get a SSN until you are authorized to work. so in your case, until you activate your CR1 visa.

met summer 1999, summer 2000 hooked up-whoo hoo summer fling

summer fling failed to fizzle, married 2003

I-130 mailed 12/15/03

4/1/04 no word from NE contacted senators office, app found

NOA1 4/13/04

Gave up on ridiculously long US process-started Canadian

12/4/04 submitted app

LSS app returned because of missed signatures, lost in transit, resubmitted in June

9/28/05 landed, yippie

10/4/05 fly back to US to "finish up Master's" lose mind and switch to PhD

Damn it back to the US process

3/something/2005 finally get NOA2, no idea why it took so long

4/15/07 get case approval from NVC

8/9/07 Montreal here we come

10/14/07 hubby activated his visa

Welcome to VJ!!! Were a friendly bunch in the Cdn forum. can't promise it is that way in Off Topic, lol

Onm one of the forms, think it is DS 230, there is a box one can check off for the SSN--which u will get AFTER u get approved for the visa and cross the border into the USA!! JUST be aware that if u check the box, the SSN doesn't always come!! Does for some, someit does not!! If after 10-14 business days, no SSN, then one has to goto ur local SSN office and reapply, but thats down the road and not a worry right now. Welcome to VJ

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thanks for the welcome :)

I am still a bit overwhelmed with everything right now - it happened so fast

I mean, we both knew it was going to happen - but just not like this

we figured getting married and then sending in the ppwk that we were already married would be the fastest route for us.

we are going to have the bigger wedding in '09 - and eloping for now :)

The part I am not looking forward to is the long wait until we will be able to see each other again once I am back in Canada

I think we will probably try to visit each other while waiting for the approval tho - just hope we don't get denied at the boarder crossing

You can do a search on here. many cdns do visit with success and yes some do get denied, but I think the Success stories are well out ahead of the denials by a fair margine. But one has to be aware it could happen, and if ur flying, one is out of $$$! Driving, isnt such a big deal!! I flew monthly to DC from Canada and never had a problem, but thats just me,lol Best of luck

I think we would try me driving and him flying up to Ohio

our friends live there - so even if I get denied at the Windsor/Detriot crossing at least he would still have friends to visit and not be a total waste :)
